removing surface from an axe face

I have been using Inventor since about 2006 and currently on version 2010.  Most of what I do is very simple very rarly having a need to get into 3D sketching and surfaces.

I currently am having an issue with simply trying to remove a scallop area off an axe blade that I am modifying.  Attached is the file which has a boundry patch that I am just trying to extrude up through the original face cutting away the material thus leaving a scallop.

Can someone explain a process for doing this.  I have tried to use thicken/offset and get an error message when trying and am not familiar enough with tools to try a different way.

Thanks,

Chad

I don't have 2010, so I can't provide the solution for you, nor even verify that it works in 2010, but try this:

Forget the boundary patch.  Instead, use the Split tool to split the two faces with your 3D Sketch8, then use Delete Face with Heal checked to delete the two faces that you just defined with the Split tool.  Works in 2015, anyway.

I'd also recommend modeling half of the blade, then mirror the whole solid when you're finished-- quite a bit less work in the end.

Thanks,

I would have never thought to use the split tool!  I have been getting very frustrated because I knew it should be something very simple that I just have not done or not thinking of doing.

I also took your advice and did a solid split and mirrored the finished half.  Thanks a bunch!

If your boundary patch extended beyond the faces, it could all have been done in one Split operation using the Trim option, but for some reason Inventor wouldn't use your patch to split the wide face, even though the 3D sketch which defined that edge worked just fine.
