Wrapping a plastic sheet with detailed geometry

Hello everyone

I need to design model which is a plastic a grid with a cable circuit laying over it. To design the model as a flat sheet was no problem, but the client wants additionally it wrapped in a cylinder shape.

I have seen other questions regarding this issue, but all of them were about wrapping a simple sheet, but it does not suit my case because the "sheet" must have cuts to create the grid and also the geometry of the cable. So, the coil command with spiral does not work, and I think all the usual commands for metal sheets also don´t work.

Any ideias of how could I solve this Problem?

Can you Attach your file(s) here or at least a picture of something similar?

Hello JDMather

I can post a picture of the flat version of the model...

what I need to do it is wrapp it onto a rolled form...just like a roll of paper or a scroll.

That doesn't look proprietary - can you Attach the Inventor file(s) here?

Hi...those are the files that I used.

Hi! You want to wrap it in coil shape or a pure cylinder? These are two different things. The former is would be difficult. I don't think Inventor can do it yet. The latter can be done by using Bend Part command.

Many thanks!

Maybe you can address the design like that? IV2018 files.

Cheers,

Igor.

Hi. The idea is to wrap in a coil shape. I could to talk to my client if a pure cylinder is an option, though, since I don't see any possible solution for the coil shape.

Hi! Indeed, I am not aware of a way to wrap geometry around a coil. Inventor does not support it yet.

Many thanks!

Hi

Could you explain how did you do the Spiral part?

Hello Mateus,

1. Create a sheet metal cylindrical part, unfold it, do the cuts as needed, refold it and save.

2. Derive that part into a new file. Create a sketch on the face at the beginning of the cut. Draw a required circle in there.

3. Sweep the circle using the edge of the cut as a rail.

4. Turn the visibility of the derived component off and save the file.

That's pretty much it.

Cheers,

Igor.
