Work Point won't recognize and attach to a sketch point - Inventor 2020

Hello All,

I'm having zero luck in attaching a work point (using Vertex, Sketch Point or Midpoint option) to a sketch point in Inventor 2020. I've tried both settings of the sketch point switch with no luck. I never had any problems doing this in previous Inventor releases.

Any ideas what I may be doing wrong. Hopefully it's not a glitch.

Hi Derek,

Can you walk through your workflow? When I look at the workpoint object, it doesn't have the snap options a sketch point has. Or, can you do a screencast video so we can take a look at the workflow and see what is happening?

I found a work-around using the Work Point at Intersection of Two Lines which placed a Work Point at the location needed. I had earlier placed a sketch point at this same intersection but had no luck in getting a Work Point to attach to the sketch point. Not sure how to do a screen cast video. I'm back in operation now - thanks for responding.

You did not say which version of Inventor you are using.  However, I believe that this workflow is not permitted in an assembly (in any version), but only in parts.  Is that the case?

Sam was replying to the original post. Asking the question about the version. 🙂
Anyway, I do recall having similar issue once with not being able to select a sketch point for placing a work point in IV2020. If I remember correctly - the work point I was trying to create was on the Assembly level. I did find a way around it. But couldn't find an explanation for such a behavior.

Hi Folks,

Assembly work feature is different than part work feature. Assembly work feature requires an equivalent assembly constraint. In this case, the assembly work point needs to attached to an assembly sketch point. However, assembly sketch geometry is for creating assembly machining feature purpose. Currently, creating an assembly constraint with a piece of assembly sketch geometry isn't supported. As a result, the workpoint cannot be created.

I recently ran into this where I had a need to include a work point in a drawing to help with drawing creation of several variations containing the same features that moved in each part.  Many times, the feature moving would break dimension links.  To overcome the inability to attach the point directly to a sketch point, I constrained the point using the same references as my sketch.  Also, since it doesn't appear that you can just select a visible sketch dimension to use as the offset, I needed to enter the dimension by name to drive the point location from the sketch dimension. 

It's disappointing that work features cannot be associated like this in an assembly similar to part files.  Sketch points do not have the same functionality downstream when you need to use that point for something else.

I've also used a similar workflow to drive plane locations in an assembly for the same reason of not loosing my dimension references in a drawing when the feature changes to parts cause edges to be lost.

Sorry for the late response, but hopefully this helps answer the question posed.  If not for the original poster, for another user with the same problem that stumbles across this thread.
