To start I am still browsing and reading all the posts using the search function and have opened up a support ticket. Just wanted to get a post out in case anyone else has been experiencing this occurrence.
Windows 10 and Inventor 2016 SP1 Update 1 installed. Both are 64-bit.
To reproduce the error - as soon as I log into Windows 10 and if first thing I do it double click on a folder or empty the recycling bin, "EXPLORER.exe" will crash. This also happens several times through out the day while working in Inventor. Strangely enough it only happens on my desktop and NOT my laptop running the same software config. Below is the event log:

Solved! Go to Solution.
Your description (and title) is a little confusing to me as you don't describe how Inventor crashing (only Explorer).
I am experiencing similar issue with Explorer crashing in Win 10, but my Inventor 2016 SP1 Update 1 is perfectly stable. It never occured to me to check the event log as I assumed this was a Win 10 issue.
There are a few posts on the internet about that utx.dll which I think is some shell extension that probably integrates pack and go,etc.. Inventor functionality into Explorer
So its the Inventor dll causing explorer to crash..
You're correct Sorry.
My Inventor 2016 SP1 Update 1 is rather stable as well. It seems to be a Windows 10 issue caused by Inventor 2016. I found 1 suggestion on the internet to rename the utx.dll and going about your marry way. I just don't know what this file is for.
I'm just going uninstall Update 1 for now. Below is from Autodesk Support:
In the Windows Application Event Log, it can be found that the File Explorer crashed due to C:\Program Files\Autodesk\Inventor 2016\Bin\utx.dll being faulty.
Cause
Solution
Workaround:
Instead of renaming/replacing dll files try:
1. open a command prompt as administrator
2. type :
"C:\Program Files\Autodesk\Inventor 2016\Bin\Inventor.exe" /install
3. Wait for about 30 seconds & then retry whatever was causing the crash.
Hope this helps,
Chris
I am having this issue on Inventor 2023. When I try the proposed solution, I get the same exact UTX.dll error:
Error: Access violation - code c0000005 (first/second chance not available)
Crashed Module Name: utx.dll
Exception Address: 0x00007ffb718dff43
Exception Code: c0000005
Exception Flags: 0
Hi! Your crash may not be the same as the original one. Did you send in the crash report? If yes, please send me an email (johnson.shiue@autodesk.com). I would like to find the crash report and understand the the UTX.dll crash better.
Many thanks!
Maybe not, however the error code appeared the same from first glance. I tried to send the report but it gave an error:
Here are the deets:

Crashed Module Name: utx.dll
Exception Address: 0x00007ffb1f62ff43

Hi! Are you able to connect to the internet before the crash?
Many thanks!
