Why is renumbering/renaming assembly files the most difficult thing in the universe?

These files+ assembly needs to be given unique name. I cant add them to vault until they got that..

How do i do it?

Below is me ranting, and can be ignored.

Inside Vault it is easy enough, outside vault its pure hatred.

This menu?

No.. because that would be too easy..

How about this one:

No.. because adding a "Renumber and add to vault" would be too easy..

How about check in and get a prompt with a an alternative?

No because adding a "would you like to replace in current assembly or renumber current files" is too easy.. must make engineer mad first..

How about

No, because it cant find the files for you all of a sudden, all it can is to deny you to add them.. without providing a solution.

So you have to MANUALLY FIND the file in a gigantic vault..

Hi!

All the parts in an assembly have links, so if you change the filename could bring breaking links problems.

You can use Design Assistant to change the part's filenames and maintain the links between files in the assembly.

Ideally i need it to have a number from vault.  Can design assistant do that?

Edit: tried to edit so i could add to vault and chance there..

But names are grayed out

Trying to figure out why perfectly logical behavior is such a problem?

You had to know that multiple files with the same name is a really bad idea. Windows will let you get away with it but vault will not.

In the assembly use Save and Replace. That will keep most of your links

Trying to figure out how to SOLVE this logical problem. Autodesk have not made it easy.

btw. you can add duplicates in Vault. But its not on by default.

Where is this save and replace? I do not see it in your picture. I hope you do not mean mean the labour intensive manual way i have always used that is time consuming, error prone and a excellent way to get something wrong.

Save and Replace is top center, large icon.

You know how I get around the labour intensive way of renaming files? By not creating duplicate files, it is the worst sort of modelling behaviour.

I do not have that tab for some reason. I have pro.

MatsNorway1_0-1680002858856.png

I was sent the files, different product on assembly level, i am not rebuilding their models to make my vault look nice.  Reuse is ideal, but i got stuff to do first.

Click down on the productivity tab. You have " Create Derived Substitutes " showing.

You are still blaming the software for operating properly when you should be blaming your companies systems for not

Vault Pro has user-configurable numbering schemes for Inventor files.

https://help.autodesk.com/view/VAULT/2023/ENU/?guid=GUID-F5356B61-194B-45BF-8B92-31C299A37206.

Are you using Frame Generator to create parts?  If so have you made any changes to the file naming defaults? Can you find a combination that gives a unique filename for every placed length?

Vault renumbering is turned on. It works in all other instances well. But not when the part is not in vault yet. I need a numbering tool before it goes into Vault.
