Using projected geometry for extrusions

Hi there,

 

I have a question about a specific part I'm working on. 

 

I've used an ellipsoid to carve out a curved surface in a rectangular extrusion. I would like to trim the rest of the rectangular extrusion with a cone geometry. I've attached the part and a screenshot of what I've got so far. I would like, however, to project the intersection of the cone and the surface (the left side of the screen shot) so that I can trim the unnecessary material at the top of the screenshot. 

 

I tried projecting the geometry of the front surface onto the back surface with a sketch, and then using that sketch as the basis for an extrusion that would run until the front surface to 'fill in' the gap in the screen shot. This didn't work and would've rectified only one of the two issues.

 

Does anyone have a suggestion or two?

Hi, 

 

Thank you for giving this a shot despite my poor explanation. Let's not worry about the bottom part of the image right now, because it is the least important for my purposes. It looks like you defined a plane that is tangent to the ellipsoidal surface and trimmed the material on one side. This is a start, but I would like to do that at every point along the ellipsoidal surface.

 

Here's another way of phrasing it: as the cone expands through the rectangular extrusion there is a significant amount of material used that is not part of the ellisoidal surface at all.  In the side profile I attached in one of my screenshots, it appears at the top, which you addressed. In a face-on view, the excess material forms a "halo" almost all the way around the ellipsoidal surface.

 

I would like to be able to trim off this excess material.

 

Is that any clearer? Perhaps if I could figure out how to word the question, I could figure out the Inventor operation needed to actually accomplish this.

This isn't the exact goal of my design, but I think I can probably figure out how to get there from here.
