Hi all,
I am trying to create a triaxial ellipsoid (a sphere squashed/stretched along 3 axes). Therefore,
I created a sketch and made an ellipse in the XY plane.
I drew a line across the Y axis and trimmed it to create a half-ellipse.
I revolved it along the Y axis and got a rotationally symmetrical ellipsoid (like one would get in a lathe).
I then tried to 'squash' it along the X axis by scaling non-uniformly by 0.5.
AI showed me the desired shape during preview, but then showed an error message saying DirectEdit failed. No further information. I observed this kind of behaviour with other features as well (i.e. the preview showing the desired result, but then failing w/o further explanation when the tool applied).
I have attached my IPT file, if it helps at all. Tried to locate the log, but failed... for now at least ๐

That's been caused by an inaccurate sketch for the ellipse.

Hi Walter,
Thanks a lot for responding. I cannot open the file in my 2016 AI, I need to reinstall the newer build, did not get around to doing it yet.
May I ask to briefly point out what was imprecise in my sketch? I thought it was 'just an ellipse', but I may be wrong

Line does not have a vertical constraint.
Line does not have coincident constraint between midpoint and origin.
Ellipse does not have a coincident constraint between centerpoint and origin.
Missing two size defining dimensions.
Oh, oh. I've added the 2018 file before. Now 2016
