TMP files not deleting

Ever since I upgraded from Inventor 2022 to 2023, my folders are burdened by tmp files linked to Inventor drawings.

If I create a drawing, or work on an existing drawing, a tmp file is created within the same location as that drawing file. If I close the drawing, the tmp file is automatically deleted as it's supposed to, but for some reason after a few seconds, the tmp files pops right back again. You can manually delete the tmp files as many times as you like, they just keep coming back while the inventor drawings aren't even open.

Hi Roberts,

I believe you are using Inventor dwg file. If yes, it is an AutoCAD behavior. When a dwg file is opened, a .tmp file is created as a backup.

Many thanks!

Hi Johnson,

This is correct, the tmp files are generated by the dwg file. And yes, I know the tmp file is a backup file created while working on the dwg file, but is supposed to be automatically deleted when the dwg file is closed. This was the case ever since I started working on Inventor back in 2008. My issue is that they are no longer being deleted by the system. And if I delete them, they just reappear about 30 seconds later while the dwg file is inactive. I even have design files where there are 3 tmp files generated by the same dwg file (not even open or being worked on)

I send my files as an attachment to our suppliers/fabricator, and now have to go through every folder within the attachment to delete all the tmp files folder by folder, and this has become a hassle and a nuisance.

Even if it is an Autocad behavior, I don't have Autocad installed on my PC.

Hi Roberts,

You are right. The tmp files should be deleted after Inventor is closed. The tmp files should not stay. I am not sure if the following article applies to you. Please take a look. Maybe the dwg file contains corrupted OLE objects.

Many thanks!

Hi Roberts,

Open "Application Options" on your starting screen in Inventor. Chose "General" bar. Unclick options "Show Home on startup" or change "Maximum number of recent documents" to 1. I hope this is solution you were looking for.

Hi Johnson,

That does look like the problem I am having. Unfortunately when I run the script on VBA, I get a compile error.

AutoCAD drawing files are saved as .bak, not .tmp
