This error is seriously getting old. Autodesk PLEASE FIX THIS

Once again, I am here to complain about the error; "The current operation requires data from document.....".

This time, I was trying to render a model for our marketing department to use. Why can't the reason for this error be fixed? This has plagued Inventor for YEARS. For release after release after release. This is getting OLD. We pay good money for our subscriptions to your products. In my case, I have 32 seat licenses that I manage, and my users are so tired of this error.  FIX THIS PLEASE. FIX THIS PLEASE. FIX. THIS. PLEASE.

EDIT TO ADD:

When this error appears and I do a Vault search for the part in question, Vault will return a blank triangle status icon (The local copy is a historical revision of the leading revision in the Vault) for the offending part. Many times, we are able to get rid of this error by searching in Vault for, and performing yet another "get" on the part and then selecting "Retry" from the error dialogue.

This does NOT always work, however.

Not sure if this will help peg down the problem or not, but we occasionally see that error if someone is checking in a sub-component at the same time someone else is opening a higher up assembly.  If, during the millisecond the file is gone while Inventor is creating an old version of A.ipt, someone tries to open B.iam that contains A.ipt, we will get that error.  I noticed that as the "missing" file had always just been edited.
Hope that might help.

That is a good thought but unfortunately it is not the case, at least in our experience. The "offending file" has rarely been edited in any capacity within a close timeframe to the error being received.

Hi! The error message indicates that Inventor has trouble locating the file. This may mean the file is not there yet or the user does not have the privilege to access it. Try this real quick. Right-click on Inventor icon -> Properties -> Compatibility -> check "Run as Admin." Does it work better? If yes, it means the user profile may be too restrictive to run Inventor.

Many thanks!

Many times, when this error is received and we look in vault for the offending file, the Vault Status icon is the empty triangle denoting that the file is on our local drive but out of date. Sometimes we can perform a 'get' on the file and the matter resolves itself, but most of the time that is not the case. Running as admin does not fix the issue, either.

Thank you for your insight!

@CGBenner

After 4 months of logging .ipt files that Inventor throws into the error dialogue, I can safely say that the only commonality in these files are that they are created under our roof. There truly seems to be NO rhyme or reason for the files causing the error. I don't know what else to dig into concerning this issue. I simply hope that the Autodesk coding experts can figure out what is causing this and code it away.

Still not fixed, I see. I can NOT stress enough how frustrating this is, what with having to close all open models, close Inventor, and restart the **** program.

Could it have something to do with Windows' management of Permissions?
I've had this happen with other apps in a similar manner.

Not trying to sound like 'I believe in magic', but...

I wonder if there is a way to reset the Inventor/Vault connection without closing the app?

Maybe one of your coders can make a small Windows applet and you can just 'press a button' on your desktop (or in Inventor) to clear the memory register and reset everything to work again?

I don't know if that is an issue or not. I DO know that this has been happening for about 10 years and Autodesk either doesn't care or has no idea how to fix the issue, as I have gotten zero help with the problem.

Bummer, I hear ya.

Since I don't know anything about how Vault interacts with Windows Permissions (or if it does at all?), it would take an Autodesk insider to help you troubleshoot this w/Inventor.

Here's a tool I use to see what happens when things run afoul while an app executes.

Maybe this could help one of your system guys pin-point the culprit?

Hi! I fully understand your frustration. The the error keeps coming up without a solution. However, it is equally frustrating that we could not find the reproducible workflow and fix the problem.

I do believe there is a bug somewhere. We just don't know how to reproduce it yet.

The randomness shows that the behavior may have a little bit local dependency. Try this. Clean up %temp% on the machines. Make sure all critical Windows updates are installed and the graphics driver is updated.

Many thanks!

@johnsonshiue

Thank you for your reply, good Sir. I do make sure that my temp folder is cleared once a week and this still happens. I always install all critical Windows updates, as well. The fact that this has been happening release after release after release is what is really exasperating. It has been hanging around for at least 10 years, and it is frustrating for people to have to close down every open file in Inventor and restart Inventor in order to get the error to go away. Yes, SOMETIMES it works to perform another 'get' on the file that Inventor can't seem to find, but the majority of the time this does not work.

We pay VERY GOOD money to Autodesk for our subscription licenses. It would be nice to see this error fixed instead of rolling out some new feature that may or may not be used by every license holder. Get rid of this issue and THEN move on to something new.

Still no fix for this? How many releases/patches/updates, etc are we going to put up with this?

Hi! I am sorry I am still clueless since we are not able to reproduce it. Another thing to look at is to make sure there are no duplicate files. It is possible there are duplicate files in the project folders so that Inventor may resolve to one of the same named files. This is just a wild guess. I am not sure if it is related.

Many thanks!

Adding more to this thread, as I am in the middle of a large project and I am getting this error at least 5 times a day, causing me to close down everything I am working on and restarting Inventor. As you can see from this screen shot, Autodesk Inventor Professional is trying to tell me that I don't have a particular file but as you can see by the Status icon and the Vault path, I absolutely DO have this file.

I am currently using INV 2020 and the ONLY time that I ever see this message is when I am doing something that I shouldn't be... like moving/deleting/renaming files when I have files open in Inventor.  I am not saying that is what is going on here, that is just been my experience.

It is almost like even though Vault is showing you the file is local, Inventor can't find it for some reason.  I'm sure you have checked your .ipj and the file is on the path, correct?

In Vault Pro, go to Tools > Options.  Check the box "Show Working folder location". Now when you select a file, it will show the full local path for the file (see screen cap below).  This is helpful to see where Inventor thinks the file will be.  You can also right-click on the file in Vault and choose "Goto Working folder" and this will also show you where the local file resides.

Are you trying to open an iam when you get this message.... or do you have an assembly open in Inventor and this message just comes up out of the blue?

We have done all of the above that you have suggested. This error can pop up out of nowhere at any time. It happens a lot when the mouse cursor happens to touch a .ipt or .iam in the model that Inventor decides that we do not have. It can pop up when loading a freshly 'gotten' assembly. It can pop up when using the 'measure' tool. It is seemingly random, but obviously that can not be the case; SOMETHING has to trigger it.

That is weird.  I all ways thought that once the file was loaded in Inventor, it never had to re-read the file again just because you swipped over it with the mouse. This probably rules out an issue with the .ipj file... it seems much deeper than that.

Are any of your "local" files stored on a server or where others might have access to them while you have them open in Inventor?  Can you post your .ipj file?

No; our working folders are local on our C: drives.

I really don't see anything in the ipj that might cause an issue....but since you are grasping for any solution, I would try this.

Set the template file to a local path, .\Templates

Old Versions to keep = 1

I don't really think this is causing your issue, but this is how my ipj is setup.
