Text align crashes Inventor

Just crashed Inventor for the 3rd time in quick succession by using the text align command in a drawing. The text is 2 simple single line items, I select the 1st one, shift select the 2nd, Rclick & select align. The align dialogue box appears but is empty, Inventor hangs & says 'not responding' then crashes. This has happened on several previous occasions with different drawings, is this a known problem or is it just me?

@NigelHay

Nigel,

Have you sent in the CER for these crashes? If so what email did you use? I see no CERs with 'nigel.hay' in them...

Or better yet can you give us the IDW file here for us to try ourselves?

Steven, I didn't get the report dialogue pop up with any of these crashes so nothing was sent. IDW attached, the action was aligning 'ST-X' & 'MCP125'.

OK I just aligned them vertically and horizontally in 2018 (internal build) without any problems.

Let me load up 2017 and try it again.

Thanks for giving me the data.

Hmm... I can align picking either first in 2017 R3 as well.

What version of 2017 do you have?

Mechanical design suite 2017.3, would that be right?

@NigelHay

There's no Mechanical Design Suite..  In addition your file properties indicated it was created in 2014 and last saved under 2017 (Build 210142000, 142).

Launch Inventor, select Help/About/Inventor and what does the information indicate?  Create a screen shot and post here to confirm.  But make sure to blur out your serial # if its in the image..

OK, went back to the Adesk download site, I have Product Design Suite Ultimate 2017.

The drawing sent was a 'save as' copy of one created in 2014 then modified today.

But as Mark said, what does your About box say? RTM, R2, R3?

I can't reproduce your issue with 2017.R3...

@johnsonshiue Can you try this out in 2017 RTM? I only have R3 handy and it doesn't crash there or 2018...

Hi! I did a search on our defect database and I found a similar case. The hang behavior is due to a conflict between certain drawing command dialogs (Align Text and Weldment Symbol) and Window Theme. The issue has been addressed in Inventor 2017 R3 Updates.

If you don't have access to R3 Updates, you can try changing Window Theme. Go to Control Panel -> Appearance and Personalization -> Personalization -> select a pre-defined theme like "Window 7."

Many thanks!

Johnson,

The theme is the default Windows one, I have not changed it since installing apart from using a JPEG as wallpaper.

I get pop-ups advising me of Inventor updates etc. & install those as soon as they appear. I've looked at downloads in my Autodesk account & can only see hofix1 which is already installed.

Hi Nigel,

The defect discussion did not specify which exact theme can cause the issue and which exact theme would avoid the issue. Could you try changing it to Windows Classic theme and see if the issue goes away?

Regarding R3 update, you would need to log in to subscription site to download it.

Many thanks!

I've changed the theme to Win classic but as the text align problem is random, I won't know if this is fixed unless the problem happens again.

I logged in to the subscription centre & I can see the original programme files & updates but nothing called R3, where should I be looking?

See if you can gain access to the Service Packs from the links here

https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/inventor-products/downloads

Edit:  Well it looks like the links take you to manage.autodesk.com where I assume you were already looking.

You are only entitled to the R2 and R3 version if you have an active maintenance plan or a active term based license.   In addition (an Autodesk would have to clarify this)...  If you have the free educational version you may not be entitled to either.  But I don't remember the ruling on educational license.  I'm only pointing this out because you said you can't find it in your Autodesk Account.

It did take me to the ADesk account but it was presented differently. I now have R3 installed so I guess I wait to see if the problem has gone. Previously the text align would work most of the time but crash Inventor every now & then. With the drawing I posted, it crashed several times. I have now used the text align in that drawing & it worked OK but only time will tell if it is a complete cure. Thank you everyone for the help.

BTW, the Win classic theme looks horrible but all of the dialogue boxes etc. open noticeably quicker & crisper. I guess we don't realise how we slow Windows down by making it prettier.

I've now done a fair bit of text alignment & no issues so hopefully the various changes have sorted this problem out.
