Sweep continuous cut over surface

Hello,

 

I'm trying to Sweep continuous cut over surface

 

1) On XZ Plane from central line I draw curve with calculated length by circumference of diameter

 

2) Сreating 3D sketch / Project to Surface / Wrap to surface where use object body as Faces and line with Curves

 

3) On XY Plane draw Profile rectangle or slot sketch with using of Project Geometry and Coincident Constraint with 3D sketch curve

 

4) In Sweep selecting slot Profile, 3D sketch curve as Path and Cut with Path & Guide Surface

In result I got Sweep furrow, but I'm trying to fugue out, how to connect continuous cut, if I want marge curve starting and ending points in one continuous line. Сalculateing of starting point and ending point for overlapping or just even if I end line too close with starting point of line, it shows intersection error

 

Any advice, guide or example would be helpful

Post your file (ipt) please.

 

Additional question: Do you really want or need the discontinuity of smoothness where the endpoint meets the startpoint (different tangency directions)?

I'm trying draw specific form of curve lines on cylindrical cam surface, and I need to understand how to do this with  manually drawn line with equal  starting   and ending points joining. 

 

Seems like I'm doing something not quite correct or missed  important step, I can't make continuous line over circumference  of diameter, operation did not produce meaningful result:

iProperties indicates that you are using Inventor 2019 SP0.

You should install the latest Updates for 2019.

 

 (See Attached *.pdf)

This was written 14 years ago - long before the Cylindrical Cam generator.

Now you can use the Cam Generator - start a new Assembly file and go to Design tab and click down arrow next to Disc Cam to get to Cylindrical Cam.

Sorry, I probably didn't answer to your additional question

 

I should avoid discontinuity of smoothness where the endpoint meets the starting point to use it with tangent constrain in continuous rotation, but the transitions along the length of my curve line are not equal in its duration and formally must be drawn by hand, however, the starting point and the ending point lines fit together, should always converge smoothly

If I get your question "What is the source of the Displacement curve?" correctly:

 

The line is drawn by hand and corresponds to the position at a certain degree of rotation, and I need two other lines with different form over the same surface, and yes line should be linear between transitions

 

Now I'm watching Dynamic Simulation of Cylindrical Push/Pull Cam where you're showing Cylindrical Cam Component Generator and Design cylindrical cams

 

First I need figure out how set diameter to surface and create arrhythmic curve line where the wave changes transition bending frequency asymmetrically from start to end point along the circumference:

In the >>first video<<  I show, how to avoid the error message.

- The straight length of the sketch must be EXACT the circumference (d0 * PI)

- The direction of tangency at the both endpoints should be exact the same value

- Your Sketch58 includes (obviously unintentionally projected) geometry which must not be there.

But the result will not be what you want - the slot is too tight at some places.

 

In the >>second video<<  I show another way which I prefer to create such slots.

First I'm trying to fix actual way following your >>first video<< 

 

So, I've inserted  d0 * PI for circumference  length instead manually calculated number  and fixed direction  Tangent for both endpoints located on one line 36 mm from top,  removed 3d sketch line with same following steps, but error still appears, can you check my ipt please, I'm not sure what I've missed

Finally, I got result

 

Problem was with ending point. Seems like there was not enough bend for smooth connection in previous file

Hi! This case would need to use Solid Sweep in 2020 and later releases. However, the path is too complicated and Solid Sweep fails. It seems underconstrained. How is the path defined?

@lodes39 uses IV 2019 (I think).

 

And the sweep may fail because the cut is too deep.  In my example above (second video) I used a smaller deep, otherwise you get a too sharp curce at the bottom of the slot. (see 3:20)

Sure, this path fails with physical sliding at some points, because it is not  yet fully defined,  as well as  depth of the cut just makes example for my question in post. Looks like connection point depends also on closer bends, even if I'm not trying cut it for slider, let's say if it's just a decorative cutout.  So, this method >>first video<<  sees works fine, as well as >>second video<<  shown by Jurgen

Hi! Just an update on this case. This can be done by Solid Sweep. But, it does require multiple workarounds and jump through multiple hoops to make it work. It is not too difficult if you have the patience.

Basically, you need to break the 3D path into two halves. This will help avoid the self-intersection within the same path segment that Sweep does not handle well. Next, create two separate Solid Sweeps. Then, delete the overlapped faces (the tool) and stitch the surfaces together to get the final tool. Lastly, cut the body with the tool.
