Step file material

Hi All,

I am using IV2018. I have couple of quick and short queries. I imported a step file and loaded model all the parts show material as generic instead of actual material assigned ? Is there a way, I can import with actual material assigned? Or that is standard for step file to neutralise all material ?

Second query, can you display model how it looks from certain distance ? Say I build a frame of 2m wide x 6m tall. Is there a way to show how it would look from 3m away from frame? I keep getting asked on the model if we can see the view standing at certain distance ?

Let me know.

Many thanks and Kind Regards,

Yashi

Hi Yashi,

The ability import STEP Materials is enabled in 2020 and later.

Many thanks!

As @johnsonshiue mentioned, this may not be the case in more recent versions of the program.  But historically, STEP files have not carried material data.  What you are seeing is normal.

There is a Perspective View option for simulating something closer to what the human eye sees when looking at an object.  But I don't believe there is any camera control in Inventor detailed enough to represent what the model would look like from a specific distance.

In Inventor Studio you can define a camera by a target and a position, if you use a positioning sketch line you can set those targets to the endpoints of that line:

You can then right-click on the camera in the browser and select "set view to camera" to get the view from your selected distance.

Would that be an acceptable method?

(i used a single 2d sketch to define the camera position, but you could also make one that puts the camera on eye-level if you define the height as well)

Hi, Johnson.

Is there a prerequisite for the STEP file? I am using version 2022 but I am still getting Generic material from STEP files.

Hi! I could be wrong but I thought from Inventor 2021, the STEP import did honor the material style (if the matching style existed in Inventor). Please share a STEP file that behaves otherwise. I would like to understand it better.

Many thanks!

Hi, Johnson.

I would like to share that file with you but I don't have permission. I understand that there are two versions of STEP that are being used. Perhaps one of them does not capture material data?
