Sketched Symbol is not updating

I created a symbol with imported images. I accidentally added one of the images twice.

I have tried to delete and save the symbol back to my Symbol Library as a Replace dozens of times. The extra image is deleted in the current document that is using it. But it remains permanently part of the symbol. Every time I insert a that symbol again or into a new drawing, the accidental second image is always there. Very frustrating.

What are the steps of editing a symbol and saving the new version back to the Symbol Library?

For the symbol that is right and being used (without the double image), right click and select save to symbol library. Select your symbol folder where you want it saved and it will prompt to save new or over-write. I would just over-write the bad symbol and it should stay.

That didn't work. Now I have two symbols that have the extra image.

are you sure you didn't resave the symbol with two photos? Can you not just open this symbol to edit it with 'edit definition' and delete the extra image?

Are these local symbols, or symbols made by someone in the company and in your standards?
Did you just make this symbol for yourself?

If these are symbols someone else made and they are saved in your library, edits you make and symbols you create locally don't get pushed into the library, or into your IDW file. The symbol would only be available in one specific print the way you edited it.

Deleted the extra photo multiple times. Each time, I Save as I exit the editing. I then attempt to Save to Symbol Library just like you showed. Both images always show up no matter what I do.

I created this symbol and symbol library. It is my intent to share this library with another user, or even put it on the Standard Title Block Format (it is now required on all our product drawings).

Oddly, I created a different symbol that same day (only with no error of double images). When I use it in my drawing, I get a "lock" icon in the Sheet browser. My other troublesome symbol does not show that lock icon.

Hi

I am not sure about symbols, but with title blocks, the image sometimes gets stuck. The fix, is the way the image is deleted. Don't use the delete key, rather RMB and select delete, this normally fixes the issue and removes the image.

The Lock symbol is because the sketched symbol is "Static", edit the placed symbol, or double click the placed symbol and remove the "static" check mark. The static symbol is locked for rotation and scaling.

You might find it is easier to edit your symbol library directly. The location of the library can be found in the system file settings, in my case:

You can locate the symbol file and edit your library.

Hope this helps.

Hi! This behavior seems like a bug to me. I recall it was an issue in 2020. What release are you using?

Please share the idw file here. I would like to understand the behavior better.

Many thanks!

How do I delete the "copy of" symbol from the Symbol Library?

Hi

Open your symbol library (This will most likely be in a different location on your computer)

In drawing resources, find the duplicate sketch symbols

Right click select delete.

I'm sorry. You lost me at "Open Symbol Library".

What is the file extension so I can find it? And, how do I open it?

Hi

It's a normal Inventor drawing with an .IDW extension.

I am not sure of the default file location, I am guessing somewhere in the user directory, but  I am not sure, you will have to check your default settings to find the location of your file.

My files are located in a custom directory of my choosing, "D:\data\Templates\Symbols" and this is defined in the "Application Options, File Settings"

That is where you will find a file containing your saved symbols.

You can treat is as any other inventor drawing, except all you will be doing is managing your symbols, and nothing else.

When you are done, just save the file as normal, the new/ revised symbols will immediately be available for use.

EXCELLENT! I have never needed to delete anything from the Symbol Library. So I learned some valuable info today. Thanks!

However, RMC is still not getting rid of the extra image in my symbol.

That could be something with version 2021, and patches.?

I tested your symbol and the images deleted for me. (I used the right click, select delete, method)

Hi! I vaguely remember we had in issue in 2020 or 2021 about this. It had been fixed on later updates. You are still on 2021.1. Please install 2021.4 update followed by 2021.4.1 update. The issue should be fixed.

Many thanks!
