Sick constraints that shouldn't be sick

Hi!

I use Inventor Professional 2019.

I have two cases who involve errors using constraints, that I can't understand the reason for.

- I have a simple assembly with several parts and several straight forward constraints. I place a new part into the assembly and want to lock this down using three contstraints (one for each axis). When I set the first constraint (the part is now free floating) I get a "The assembly cannot be solved". Why am I getting this? There are no conflicts with any parts.

-Some times during assembly, all of a sudden, a parts gets all three constraints (three axis, three constraints) "Sick". Also here there are no obvious conflicts.

I'm no expert, but have a few years experience and i haven't had this problem with any earlier version

Hope you can help me!

Hi @Anonymous

Can you go to the Manage tab and hit Rebuild All, do you get any issues after doing this?

What other constraints do you have for those parts, that might be able to conflicting?

That's what's weird, there are no other contstraints on the new part. On the nearby associated parts there are no constraints that should intervene or get in conflict.

Also, if I hit "Accept" in the "The assembly cannot be solved", the newly created constraint will not be shown as sick.

So there is no acctual problem even if Inventor at first says "The assembly cannot be solved" and I hit "Accept".

Also also, I sometimes get an error while deleting a constraint, but this I also can just "accept" and there is no trouble later on.Skjermbilde.JPG

Is this perhaps a bug?

It's a lot of files to share ...  but can you share it for us to look at?

Nothing showed up when you hit rebuild all?

I have no idea if this works, but I tried uploading the files as .rar-file.

Hope all the files are there

Hi! The dataset is incomplete. "170826 DFM-12-25-P-A-GF---(0).iam" is missing. Could you attach it along with its ipt/iam files?

Many thanks!

Hi Chris,

I'm not exactly sure what you're asking of, but does the pic help?

Thanks for helping any ways

Hi,

I mean what are settings in application options > assembly

+ please make a video showing what exactly you are trying to constrain.

I have your assembly but cannot find what is shown in the first post.

Hi again,

I'm sorry but I don't have the time on my side these days, so I think we need to just lay this one dead for now.

Sorry for your time spent

Hi,

I am running in to a problem quite similar to this. When trying to make a new constraint in an assembly it is bringing up this error. I have tried rebuilding, I even deleted all constraints in the assembly, however it still resulted in this error.

Did anyone find a solution for this?

@mcgill-r1

This is an old thread.

What version of Inventor (including Update) are you using?

Can you Attach your assembly here - I am certain the issue will be easy to identify and solve.

Hi! Please make sure all applicable Inventor updates are installed. If you are on 2023, please install 2023.0.1, followed by 2023.2 update and 2023.2.1 update.

Many thanks!

Hi

This is an old thread, but it's still relevant.

I don't have anything helpful for your problem, but I just wanted to say this because I also have this problem and a lot of other problems with inventor.

The reason why Inventor does not know how to prioritise constraints, but does flag perfectly valid constraints as "sick", and flag sick constraints as valid, after update flag the wrong constraints as sick, and does not have a decent repair or reconstrain feature, is because Inventor is a collection of feces and its devs do not care.

Hi! Based on your reply, I can tell you are a frustrated user. Inventor as a product isn't perfect. It has problems. But overly generalized negative comments do not help. If possible, please share an example that exhibits the behavior. I would like to understand the issue better.

Many thanks!

Indeed inventor may cause frustration when basic functionalities are not working.

I have tried for years to help you understand the issue better sending hundreds of data sets, presenting those bad behaviours that have been easily replicable.

I have logged hundreds of cases with customer support.

Made hundreds posts on the forum.

And I waited for years for basic bugs to be fixed. And they haven't been. Still after 12 years (in my case) same bugs are still there and same datasets do not work.

Problem is not that Devs do not care, but rather that Autodesk corporation in its corporate "profit driven wisdom" choses not to fix those bugs.

Particular problem that this thread concerns, that is constrains solving, is caused by faulty constrain solver.

It would be naive to believe that Inventor team is not aware of that and still, after so many years "need to understand this better".

Truth is that fixing this would cost a lot as this is a very serious problem with very fundamental part of the software, and since it only really bothers "small" group of users corporate decision is not to touch it.

At times I was frustrated user, as @johnsonshiue puts it. I was really frustrated.

But I finally accepted situation as it is and found a solution that works for me.

That was stop paying for Inventor by staying on AI 2021 with lifetime licence.

Also I know already what does not work and just stopped using those "no functionalities".

It is sad and still frustrating when I need to go lengths of workarounds instead of using one simple feature that should work.

There is however a bunch of staff that works well and overall is useful in my work as I still extensively use inventor.

Autodesk switched totally from permanent licences to subscription only, arguing that this is because they are constantly developing this software and this is kind of a deal with users.

Users pay every year for supposedly better software every year.

But we know this is not true. It is done to tie users on a short leeash by the corporation keeping hostage whole of users work they lose acces to once they stop paying.

In the same time having so much power in this relation Autodesk corporation can  take such decisions as deliberately not to fix, even such fundamental problems like the one with constrain solver.

Hi Cris,

With all due respect, I have to reply since you tagged me. I think the discussion has evolved into a non-technical discussion that I am not able to comment further.

It is true that you have shown the issues to me and our team members over the years. Each one of the issues has been thoroughly investigated. When a good fix is identified, it has been applied to the product. Unfortunately, not all issues can be fixed in a timely and cost-effective matter. But some fixes are indeed made to the product based on the feedback from users like you. I hope you do see the fixes.

I wish I had a magic wand to cure every issue reported by the user including you. I am very sorry that I am not able to do that.

Many thanks!

Might be of little help, but @Cris-Ideas  I've spent a lot of time like you.. put in bug reports, part of beta's, testing software.  I've talked to all of the Inventor and Vault people..   Gone to Novi a few times, seen them at AU.  They listen and they do care. And they all would wave that wand if they could.

I learned they look at them all.. Idea's, bug report, suggestions, ideas and more.

For bugs and issues: They investigate the fix .. what it'll cost. But also WHAT else is affected? That was one of the key things. If they do this, what happens to X, Y, and Z.. is the workaround just better? Unfortunately, that's part of the equation. It's not crashing the software... if so that's up for a fix.

100's of thousands of users ..  it's hard to make them all happen. But the fact that I get an ear at times, and not brushed up .. should be something to you.

IMO

Mike
