Sheet metal contour roll

Hi,

 

just a little question.

 

With a linear segment (flange contour)+rolled segment (contour roll) i can optain a flatten pattern

 

The same shape, obtained with a unique simple sweep, than converted in sheet metal part with its thickness, Inventor can't obtain a flatten ground

 

Am I correct?

Can you give an example?

My own little test seemed to have worked, but i'm unsure how you're approaching this...

Hi!

It will not work with a solid sweep since Inventor doesn't guarantee a constant thickness along the part with these tools (sweep, loft and shell), and constant thickness across the part is a requirement for the inventor to be able to calculate the flat pattern.

 

If you use surface sweep and then Thicken tool to create the solid, it works, because Thicken tool guarantees the same thickness across all part.

Yeah, that's was my point.

If there is a little tolerance (i don't think so) in converting sweep feature

@admaiora ah ok, yeah that shape seems to rely heavily on the contour roll to determine where its bends are.

It did not unfold for me and i think it will not unfold if you used the surface-sweep > thicken method either.

(could not tell how it was built, i'm on IV2021)

This is explained in Inventor documentation.

Using Shell, sweep, etc, if the geometry is simple, usually it will work, but in some cases, that will not work. (I tried several times with Shell and it worked most of the time).

 

My point is... with Thicken it works always.

The part is not bended... is a typical press machined.

 

For the part you post... Well.... a poor workaround to obtain data enough to create a flat pattern:

Anyway, if modeled with sheet metal roll, I believe it will flatten.

Hi Matteo,

 

To unroll a sheet metal part, the roll has to be created by Contour Roll. It is because each CR carries the information that helps unroll operation (Unroll Options, kind of like K factor). A generic shape does not have such model intelligence. As a result, flat pattern will fail.
