Every time I try to save something in Inventor, it prompts to Save Copy as.

What is the problem?

The first thing that I would check is to make sure the file properties are not set to read only.   Are you using Vault?  Are these files stored on the network?

So if you tried to create a new file or folder in the same place on the network where your Inventor files are stored, can you?  Also if you copy a Inventor part file that resides on the network to your local hard drive can you then open and save it without any issues?

Is it because you have suppressed parts and now it says "Level of Detail 1" (or similar) ?

Or is the location you are saving to a library location as defined by your project file? (post a screenshot of your project file settings and indicate the location you are trying to save to)

Does it happen with all parts/assemblies or just specific files?

Just created new part and saved and closed and was not there. That is the problem I have been having this week. When I go to place component in assembly or open file thru Inventor its not in my file. But if i go outside inventor and look in the file they are there. Just today I started having saving problems. Some ipt's are saving. but my assembly and drawing are not.

Is the folder you are trying to save to is considered a Library in the Inventor project? If yes, the file cannot be saved there. All Library files are considered read-only. If you do need to modify Library files, you can set up a different project which does not have the folder path set as a Library path.

Thanks!

Welcome to the Autodesk User's Community..

Where are you saving your files?  What are you seeing?  A few things have been discussed here so far and saying you have the same problem doesn't help.

mdavis said network and ipj (project file) problem..

(Project File related issues)

Are you aware of how to work with/view the project file settings in Inventor?

(File.. Manage..Projects)..

Are you trying to save to a location covered in the "Libraries" section?

(Network Issues)

Are you trying to save to a network or other location that you don't have access to?

How do you have your IPJ set up ...and workspace?

She was using a default one ..and didn't have network paths' libraries etc ... everything was saved all over

No worries. Appreciate what you do.

Attached are shots of current settings (have tried a few combos).

Company is using a 3rd party Vault system (BC-Meridian). I am currently the only user at this site using 17, all other employees are using prior versions of Inventor.

"Save As Copy" dialogue occurs for parts as well as assemblies with all parts checked in or out, doesn't seem to matter.

Spent 2 hours doing vid conference with Meridian vendor/IT yesterday. We disconnected the Meridian Add In and tested problem with stand alone project on desktop with same parts and assemblies. That worked fine, reconnected the Add-In and back to not fine.

So it works fine without the Meridan add-on but when the add-on is loaded it doesn't work.  In the 2 hrs you spent yesterday with Meridian what did they say about it?  Did the see its not working when their add-on is loaded?  It may sound like I'm pointing fingers but to me this sound like a Meridian issue and not an Inventor problem.

Also why do you have a mixture of Inventor versions in your environment?  You should be working all on the same version unless you are testing out this given Inventor version.

I'm the 17 guinea pig. Meridian guy just seemed bewildered. No one here is a fan of Meridian, wish we were just using built in Vault. We also have Oracle for EDM and none of them communicate so it's a nice big circle-jerk of misinformation.......and I could go on....

Anyways, at that point I told him I was going to wipe the folder and rebuild the assembly from vault parts to see if that helped, as originally I built outside the vault and dropped whole folder of assemblies/parts in, but it didn't.

Hi mcfmv8,

Just to clarify: The files (folder) are not set to Read-Only in windows, is that correct? If Meridian is setting those files to read only, this will give the results you're seeing.

Now whether it's a good idea to just manually make them not read-only ... that's for someone else to answer.

I hope this helps.
Best of luck to you in all of your Inventor pursuits,
Curtis
