Saving Inventor DWG as AutoCAD DWG

I know I can use the "Save Copy As" but is there a way to default Inventor to save DWG files as AutoCAD DWG files?

No but you can use Inventor.dwg files instead of idw files to allow you to work between both programs easier..

Hi tschaeferZNBXX,

To add to mcgyvr's suggestion, you can go to the Tools tab > Application Options button > Drawing tab and change the Default Drawing File Type setting

Default Drawing File Type

Sets the default drawing file type (.idw or .dwg) when creating a drawing using New Drawing on the Quick Access toolbar.

I hope this helps.
Best of luck to you in all of your Inventor pursuits,
Curtis

Yes but we have individuals that want to copy and paste from a DWG to an AutoCAD DWG. I know its the old way but we still have people doing this.

I have changed all the settings to Inventor DWG and have our templates set to Inventor DWG.

What is it that they copy and paste from?  Do they just need the views from Inventor?

If Yes... You can use Deisgn Center to bring in views from Inventor DWGs and they can be updated similar to X-refs when the Inventor DWG updates, so do the placed references in whatever ACAD file you put them in.

If No...May the big guy upstairs give you strength to overcome whatever they are doing with your geometry after they copy and paste it.

Also, be aware of storing these files in folders that are obviously AutoCAD or Inventor, you will never be able to tell in Windows Explorer.

That is the problem. We have some individuals who are stuck in old school AutoCAD and do not want to learn Inventor. I am in a rock and hard place but I will deal with it. 🙂

Their manager can easily deal with that... Inventor or out the door is how I would handle that..

Surely someone is "in charge" there.. Owner? President?

You can't just all run wild..

What happens when you spread a line of coke on your desk? Who addresses that?

Allowing employees with similar job functions to use multiple programs is stupid..

I am trying to get control but I have been in this position before and refuse to do it for free or without a change in job title.
