It is critical that I be able to save or work in an older version of Inventor.  How do I do that?

You don't. No solid modeling software has that capability. You will have to save as .stp in order to be able to open them in earlier versions. There is always the feature recognition thing but not sure how well that would work.

If this is critical, then install older version and work in that version.

As already stated.. you can't.. You can't back-save 3D models/Inventor like you can with Autocad

The only option you have to be able to use the file in an older version is to save as a neutral format like step (stp) or iges.. The problem is that then you loose the feature tree and the ability to edit individual features like you can in the current version of Inventor.. But there is "feature recognition" tools that can "attempt" to make that easier..

But again.. If its CRITICAL.. Then you should absolutely work in the same version of the softwareas whomever you need to share with.
