Round Sheet Metal Parts

Is it possible to make a round sheet metal piece wrap around so it would overlap about .25". I know you can just do the contour roll and stop it at like 359.9 so you can get a flat pattern, but is there a way to change it so the part will extrude and overlap?

Hi btsmithAGKLU,

What version of Inventor are you using?  Someone can provide a quick example, but we don't want to do so using Inventor 2017 (for example), if you're using Inventor 2016, as you won't be able to open it.

I hope this helps.

That is very similar to what i'm looking for except the part would not have that 45 degree bend to go around it.

Hi btsmithAGKLU,

Without the bend it will self-intersect and will cause an error and/or not flatten.

The 45deg bend just creates the offset that would naturally occur when we lap a seam, it doesn't have to be 45 deg but I think you will need something to get the overlapped part above the rest of the profile.

I hope this helps.

oooooh , like that.

Seems so obvious now, but I was not picturing that type of overlap.  Smiley Embarassed

Hi! Based on your description, I think Contour Flange might be a better choice here. You need to create a sketch with a big arc. At where the two side meet, create linear segments no overlapping. Next, use sketch fillet command to round the sharp corners. Lastly, use Contour Flange to create the sheet metal part. Does it make sense?

Many thanks!
