Rotate Model with Middle Mouse Button

Anonymous

I've been researching this all day and I can't find anything that works for me.  Is there a way to change the middle mouse button from "Pan" to "Rotate" my model?  Currently, I hold "Shift" while holding down the middle mouse button and that rotates my model.  Can I incorporate that into my middle mouse button somehow without having to buy a 3D Connexion mouse?

I mapped the far right mouse button as F4 from the keyboard. Now I just hold down the far right mouse button, move the curser inside the circle and orbit the model. as soon as you let go of the right mouse button, it goes back to normal operation.

Let me know if you have ant questions mapping the buttons. It is pretty easy with simple 1 button commands and text.

Thank you for your quick reply.

I think I am reading you, so you override what they provide as the G-Shift button, and press this down to behave like F4? I get this, but I still have to also press the left-click button to rotate/orbit.

I was hoping to combine these two presses (à la SolidWorks) to work while the one button was pressed down (much like the behaviour of the middle button pan in Inventor). Sorry, I still haven't learnt how to program a button on the G600 to perform an action while pressed down.

Dear Janek,

For what I know Logitech mouse drivers do not support multiple commands. Your only option is to use the Xmouse driver. Unfortunately Xmouse does not support all your buttons on your gaming mouse but the rotate button must be possible. View this post how to set it up. I am using it for a few years now and I it works perfectly!!!

Good luck,

Martijn

Yes, while holding the right click button, click and hold the left click button to orbit. doesn't take long to get use to it and at least it is all done with the mouse.

Hi,

Still one button orbit is more convenient. I have programmed the orbit under my thumb and I can use the scroll wheel for zooming. So orbit and zooming with one hand. Some people love a 3D space mouse and some don't (like me) but everyone has to do what they like.

This solution worked for me with Inventor 2020. I had to disable the scroll lock options in the general settings to make it for for me.

8 years and 57,000 views later and this still hasn't been fixed?  Are you kidding me?  This is absurd.

The latest Inventor update includes middle mouse button preferences. MMB, Ctrl+MMB, and Shift+MMB can now be mapped to rotate (orbit), pan, and zoom. This should be helpful for those who aren't using a 3DMouse or the other solutions shared in this thread. Look for it in the Application Options for Inventor 2021.1 and later releases.

Hi,

I am using X mouse with:

- simple click on middle mouse button to change rotation center

- rotation for the middle mouse button after 500ms,

- right click to Pan after 500ms as well.

I have attached the profile settings so you can import it.

Cheers,

There is a better way to swap the controls for Pan and Orbit now. Simply go to File, Application Options, and click on the Display tab at the top, at the bottom you will see the 3D Navigation options and you are able to change the Middle Mouse Button Controls for Pan and Orbit. I simply swapped the MMB control with the Shift+MMB control, as you can see in the screen snips below, which works well as I use Orbit a lot more than I use Pan.

There are also other helpful options like zoom direction included in this 3D Navigation section.

Hope that helps anyone with this issue...

What version of Inventor are you referring to?

Inventor 2018
(23+ years of Solidworks, 5+ years of fighting Inventor)
Autodesk Vault Pro 2018

If anyone knows how to get the middle mouse button working again please advise, because mine stopped working and I can't work efficiently with the hardware I have, nor can I run out and buy something else because I've got work to do.

For the record, it would be helpful if people would answer the question that was asked and not waste the asker's time telling them to get a  3D mouse.  If you don't know the answer their question, don't post.  We just want an answer to the question of how to fix an issue with a normal mouse, we did not ask which mouse we should get instead.

The original question specified "without having to buy a 3D Connexion mouse" but your reply immediately told them to get one.  If you don't have an answer, it would be better if you didn't post, because that person needed help with a specific issue, and your reply ignored their request.

Is this real?  Users have been asking for this for 10+ years, it seems a little early for it to be implemented.  What version of Inventor is this from?  Am I replying to a post from the future?

We are using Inventor 2020, which does not have that MMB mouse setting in Application Options.  I believe it's in 2022 or 2023 versions of Inventor.

Hi Folks,

The option was made available in one of the 2021 updates. Please install 2021.4 update followed by 2021.4.1 update.

Many thanks!

AutoDesk 2020 I downloaded X-Mouse, and programmed MMB to be (during)[{SHIFT}{MMB}]. You can program it to be only for Inventor, then the MMB works normally on other programs.

You can go to: File -> Option -> Application Options -> Display -> (scroll down to bottom) -> MMB -> Orbit.
