RMB Right Mouse Button - NOT WORKING!

Working on several assemblies and parts in Inventor 2022.2.2 and while editing a purchased part (imported STEP file) I was adding and removing some constraints to make it flexible.  I went to delete some constraints and when I highlighted them and hit RMB something flashes quick on my screen but the popup menu didn't show up.  After that no matter what model I was in or what I was doing, I no longer get a popup menu when I RMB.  Then I noticed if I RMB in the top ribbon I get the popup to customize the ribbon but in the model or in the tree, RMB does nothing.

Was thinking it was one of those flaky things until another engineer heard me mentioning it and said it happens to him quite often and he has to restart Inventor to get it working again.  And looks like I have to do that, too.  Yup, restarted Inventor and now RMB works fine.

Not sure if this is a bug but if I'm not the only one having that happen, kind of thinking it could be.

@phlyx

Have you tried Alt-Tab to see if a dialog jumped behind another open window or application?  That would lock up the RMB until resolved, or you restart.

Hi! This could be DPI or UI framework related. Try the followings and see if any of them helps.

1) Make sure the Windows recommended resolution and scaling are used.

2) Right-click on Inventor desktop icon -> Properties -> Compatibility -> Change High DPI Settings -> check both boxes.

3) Go to Control Panel -> System -> Advanced System Settings -> Environment variables -> create "QT_AUTO_SCREEN_SCALE_FACTOR” and set it to 0.

Many thanks!

Thanks for the replies but if this was a Window's setting I would think it should be doing it all the time.  That was the first time it ever happened for me but the other engineer said it happens to them quite often.  And since then another engineer chimed in saying it happens to them occasionally, too.  But RMB only stops in Inventor workspace, all other apps work perfect.  And RMB popped up the menu if I click on the Inventor ribbon so it still works in Inventor, just not in the workspace or model tree.  If it happens again I can try those things but I really don't want to tweak settings over one occurrence of an issue.  Now if it stopped Units from switching to "Display precise value" and adding tolerance to all sketch dimensions, or stopped "E"xtrusion hotkey from stopping working, or stopped showing Material001, Material002 without opening the material browser, I would love that.  Those things happen every day.  😉

Happens to me maybe a few times a year.. Haven't figured out what triggers it yet..

Restarting Inventor brings functionality back..

This is certainty a bug and I can have it happen maybe 2-3 times a week/month depending on what is being worked on. See this post which is fairly similar symptoms. It has always being related to constraints and in my case not confined to a step file. Using Inv 2020.

That sounds like what I've been experiencing since probably the 2019 release, it's easy to reproduce (and avoid) once you know the steps

1. Import a part into an assembly (type doesn't seem to matter much)

2. Don't save the file

3. Put a constraint on the part

4. Right-click the constraint to modify it

It's easy to avoid as long as you save after importing parts, but it's also easy to forget and be confused when the entire instance screwed up.

Had it happen again.  Imported a STEP file for a parallel gripper and constrained the rods to the body.  Then constrained the end plates to the end of the body with a +/- distance to emulate the stroke.  I realized that I had made the stroke minus rather than plus so I RMB on the constraint to edit it, got a pop-up that something was missing but thinking I clicked on the wrong thing I just clicked okay with fully reading but when  that cleared RMB would not work over items or model tree entries.  Had to restart Inventor to fix.  Next I'll try to read the full message first.

Restarted Inventor and did the same basic thing I did before.  I downloaded an SMC MHL2-20D2 parallel gripper STEP model and opened it.  Did these steps and got it to happen again:

1- Open STEP file

2- Ground the moving components

3- Constrain all four (4) shafts to the body

4- Constrain the ends to the body with "Predict Offset and Orientation" selected

5- Set Maximum to existing dimension +50mm for both gripper jaws

6- UN-ground gripper jaws

7- Move the gripper jaws to see movement

8- RMB on one of the constraints

9- Got this error message:

2022-08-03_091958.jpg

10-RMB no longer works

Have to restart Inventor to get it to work.  I checked the Event Viewer and did not see any issues when this happened in Inventor so appears to be totally an Inventor thing and not a Windows/Hardware thing.  This is the webpage for the model I downloaded:

WORK AROUND (I think)!!!

Was able to reproduce this quite regularly as long as I was starting with a fresh, new downloaded STEP file that I had not worked with yet.  I found that if you SAVE the STEP file assembly BEFORE trying to edit any constraints then I do not get that "Serious error".  So just be sure you save the file before trying to edit any constraints.  But still a legit Inventor BUG.  😱

Hi! Scott,

I believe this issue is similar to this old thread, which has been reported as INVGEN-63342.

Many thanks!

Hey Johnson,

That is the same error and similar in nature but every time I was getting it was with STEP files but I was not creating a 'sick constraint' as I was making legitimate constraints and trying to edit them.  If I saved the assembly before I tried to edit the constraint then I did not get that error even doing the exact same thing with the exact same constraints so it is not the constraint at all, just the fact that the assembly isn't saved which makes sense saying it cannot find the specified file since when I save it, then it obviously CAN find the file.

@phlyx - you’re right. This seems to be triggered when Inventor can’t find the STEP file because it hasn’t been saved yet. Basically as soon as you get the system cannot find the specified file message.

@johnsonshiue  It is probably too late to report (release 2022 is almost retired now)
..and I'm not sure it is related, but..
in Inventor 2022(.6) second RMB in viewport doesn't close the context menu (only third does).
