Representations folder collapse after view selection

Hi all,

We recently switched form inventor 2023 to 2025 and one of the things that costs a lot of extra clicks and frustration is; when switching between views, the representation maps collapses (not all the time, but very frequently). Is this a setting? Or a new 'feature'? And is there a way to prevent this from happening?

Hi! Please install Inventor 2025.2.1 update and see if it has been fixed. I vaguely remember there was a fix to address the issue. If it persists on 2025.2.1, please share a video showing the defective behavior.

The update doesn't fix the issue.

Apparently, it remembers for each view separate if the representation folder should be expanded or collapsed. Instead of remembering for the file.

So I don't know if it is an 2025 issue or existed already in the 2023. Maybe the ilogic code which collapsed somethings by migration collapse also these folders.

I just noticed this issue as well since a very recent update.  When I go and double-click on a Representation View, the Representations folder collapses completely once the view has changed.  This is a real pain!

Hi Edwin,

If possible, please share a video showing the defective behavior. I would like to understand it better. In the meantime, please make sure all critical Windows updates are installed and the graphics driver is updated. Go to Windows Display settings and select the recommended resolution and scale. Right-click on Inventor desktop icon -> Properties -> Compatibility -> click on "Change High DPI settings" -> check both boxes.

If you are using dual monitors, please select the monitor hosting Inventor as the main display.

I have attached a screen recording showing the issue.  On certain views you will see that the issue doesn't arise, but on other views, the Representation folder collapses on its own.  Its almost like on certain views it remembers to stay open, but on most others it does not.  I've never had this issue before.  I noticed this very recently, within the last couple of weeks or so.

Another thing I just noticed, is that on the views that cause the Representations folder to collapse, those views are not "remembering" changes to rotation of the model.  See video attached.  Very annoying as this was not a thing before.

Many thanks for sharing the video! Though I still cannot reproduce the exact behavior by following the workflow captured in the video, I think I know where the problem is. The browser expansion or collapsing is actually captured by a Design View Rep. I guess the DVR you activate somehow stores the collapsed browser state. Here is a workflow to reproduce this annoying behavior.

1) Create a new DVR.

2) Right-click on the top node in the browser -> Collapse All. 

3) Expand Representations folder (but not the Design View node) -> right-click on DVR node -> New. The new design view will be activated.

4) Activate the DVR you created in step 1.

The trouble here is once the collapsed state is captured and the DVR is locked, the browser nodes will be collapsed whenever the DVR is activated.

To "fix" it, unlock the particular DVR, expand the browser node. Then relock it.

Well that "fixed" it!  So I guess it does that similar to how in each DVR, it remembers which components in the model tree are collapsed or expanded.

Is there a way to disable that feature at all?  I don't mind it for the components, but I don't see the point of that feature for the Representations folder?  I'd rather have it so I determine when the Representations folder is expanded or not, no matter which DVR I go into or out of.  That is how it used to be until very recently.

Unfortunately, no. Design View Rep always captures component color override, visibility change, and browser status.

As far as I recall, this has been the behavior with Design View Rep. Each DVR does capture the browser expand/collapse status. Are you talking about the Inventor without Design View Rep way back then?

I actually experienced this (very annoying) bug as far back as 2018.

It really makes switching between DVRs very annoying.

Next to this, our DVRs are usually made through an iLogic script, and it seems to basically default to a "collapsed" rep folder when creating new DVRs with iLogic.

It actually really doesn't make any sense that the DVR saves the state of the DVR folder since it's the only way to switch between DVRs, meaning that it ALWAYS has to be open to be able to switch DVR.

Is there a parameter that we can use in the iLogic function to default to an expanded folder during the creation of a new DVR?

I just don't recall this behavior until very recently.  It really doesn't make sense for the DVR to save the status of itself for each different DVR (as mentioned by k.hendrickx).  As far as I'm concerned, the Rep folder should be an exception to the saved state of the model browser, independent of which DVR you are in.

Honestly, I've never even suspected that the DVR saved ANY folder state in the Model Browser.

I can't even imagine why you'd ever use that.

Does anyone have a meaningful example where that might be useful?

I always figured it saved just appearance overrides, visibility settings and the associated DVR of subcomponents.

For that matter, what is the idea behind saving the collapsed/expanded state of ANYTHING in the model browser within a DVR?  As mentioned above, the important things like visibility, appearance overrides, etc., make sense.

We just upgraded from Inventor 2024 to 2026 (2026.3 update has been installed), and we are now experiencing this very same behavior.

For as long as I can remember, we could always quickly cycle through view representations without the View section of the assembly browser collapsing.  But now it very frequently (yet inconsistently) collapses when selecting a different representation.  It's definitely frustrating & more time-consuming to have to scroll up, expand "Representations," then expand "View," and then finally make a selection.

Hi! If I recall correctly, this behavior can be controlled by unchecking "Auto-expand Representation Folder on Open" option on the 3-bar menu at the upper right corner of the browser.

Start a new part. Go to the browser and click on the 3-bar menu -> Display Preferences -> uncheck "Auto-expand Representation Folder on Open."
