replacing a part in an assembly

for some reason I cannot replace a component in an assembly with a diffrent component. After selecting the component to replace, and clicking on Component ->replce, the "Place Component" workflow opens up and I can choose the component that is to be inserted. When I click open, the "Place Component" window closes but the component is not replaced. Is this a glitch in the Inventor 2023 version or am I missing something basic here ?

I tested the replace component in a a clean assembly, with no constraints, just having placed a randome number of the same components of which I tried to replace one.

Hi,

One thing to sonsider. Have you got a positional representation active?

Inventor will only replace components in the 'master' positional representaion.

Sounds like you're doing it right; some screenshots might help us realize where this is breaking down.

Thanks for the response 🙂

I only have the primary Representation activated. Its locked however. But is shouldn't stop me from replacing the part.

I'm trying to replace  Stud_220:4 with a Stud_268 in this "test" assembly but it will not accept the replacement:

After selecting the Stud_220:4, choosing its replacement (Stud_268) and pressing open, the window closes without replacing the part and no warnings or comments.

Its embarrising, and I'm probably missing something very basic, but for the life of me, I cant figure it out???

You haven't constraint the parts yet.

So add Stud_268 and delete Stud_220.

Correct, I haven’t constrained the parts in this „test“ assembly. In the

original assembly however  ( a larger Barn) they are all constrained and it would be exceptionally tedious to delete, place new studs and constrain all of them individually.

But with or without constrains, the replace function doesn‘t replace the parts and I cant figure out why? Its either my ignorance of some basic issue that I‘m missing or its a bug. I‘m hoping its just my ignorance and not a bug in this version 2023.2 which works fine otherwise.

Attach your test assembly and all the parts in ZIP file.

You start replace from here?

Right Click on the part:

Yes, that's where I start....

Strangly enough, when I place a stud and multiply the stud with a pattern, the replace works on individual elements of the component pattern...

I see the Replace component command working as expected with Inventor 2024.

My workflow:

  1. select component in graphics window or in the browser
  2. RMB to get the menu
  3. Select Replace Component
  4. Pick the new component from the Open window
  5. Click OK
  6. Inventor replaces the old part file with the new one

Selecting the component in the graphics window and using CRTL-H (default keyboard shortcut) works too.

Have you changed any settings on this window?

I chacked and all my prompts are set to "Always". There is no error message when the window closes. I wonder if this is a known issue with the 2023.2 of Inventor?

2023 is upto 2023.3

You are working in Model State.  Do you want/need Model State?

You don't need those "Move Body" for Stude_268.

You can rotate/constraint it in assembly.

Hi! This could be a bug in 2023.2 update. I cannot seem to reproduce it on 2023.3 or 2024. Please install 2023.3.

Many thanks!

Thanks so much for your response Johnson. I'm a little hesitant to update whilst I'm in the middle of a project. But I will try and report back here.

Thanks!

...meanwhile I finished my project and upgraded to 2024. The problem no longer exists in that version so it must have been a glitch in the version I used before. Thanks all for the support 🙂
