I'm new with Inventor and I need to reduce a STEP file from 1.5 GB to 200MB or even less.

I can delete anything internally. What's the best workflow or process to make a deep clean to reduce the file. Please help me, guys.

Not sure if you are aware of this, but .step files compress very well.

As an example; I have a 125Mb .stp file - compressed with 7zip at maximum compression = 15Mb .zip file

Thanks for the answer D.Lam!. But what I want is to reduce the original file size in without compressing it. Does someone know a suggested workflow to reduce it? Maybe removing internal elements, but with what command?

Hi Luiggi,

A 2GB STEP file is a giant file. It is either a very large assembly or a super complicated part. I have seen dataset like that. I don't think you can downsize the STEP file because it contains all the geometry you need. You cannot surgically remove certain detail.

What you can try is to import it to Inventor. You will need a machine with decent amount of RAM (64GB maybe). Then you can remove the unnecessary detail (parts or geometry). Then export it to STEP. Is this what you were looking for?

Let's say it is indeed reduced. What are you trying to do afterwards?

Many thanks!
