Rack Gears

I can get the Design Accelerator to draw the spur gear, but is there an easy way to get the rack gear for the spur gear that is drawn?

If you want to model a rack gear for visual purposes (not manufacturing) there is a simplified example in the Samples\Assemblies\Arbor Press.

I do need to model one for manufacturing. I'm having problems getting the rack correct to the spur gear so that the corners of the rack gears do not hit the leading and trailing teeth on the spur gear when looking at the spur gear with a center tooth perpendicular to the rack. This is driving me crazy!

How will you be manufacturing it ?

What are the specs on the Spur gear you are using and what AGMA class do you require of the Rack ?

I can probably get you a 2d profile.

I always have my gears and racks made by a dedicated gear shop.

Then I recommend that you DO NOT use the DAcc gears as they are approximation. You will need to consult a gear handbook and create proper profiles. Depending on the application you might be able to get away with less precise profiles, but most gears are purchased from suppliers who know the geometry. They can usually supply for far less cost than you can design/manufacture from scratch.

We are plastic injection molders and would use the models to produce the injection molds. The parts will probably be molded out of an Acetal material. There are no specifications on the actual gears, but it is used to raise and lower a magnifying lens in a frame on a lap table. The spur gear would be connected to a couple knobs that the user would turn to raise or lower the lens frame.

In that application you should be able to get away with a lot of slop in the clearance. If you have trouble figuring out the rack attach the pinion here.

Search for "Kisssoft" on Google, you'll find a gear design software that
you can try. It can export a gear (or rack) profile as dxf and other
formats...
