"Master" view representation active when opening from main assembly

I have some assemblies which have the "Master" view representation and the "Default" view representation. I use the "Default" view representation to turn certain components off (invisible).

I place these assemblies in my main assembly, with the "Default" view representation active and associative.

I also know for a fact that the subassemblies were last saved with the "Default" view representation active.

In my file open options under Design View I have selected "Last Active".

However, when I open the subassemblies from within my main assembly, they open with the "Master" view representation active. This is very confusing and unless I'm missing something this is not how I'd expect it to behave.

I'm not saying I don't make mistakes, or that it can't happen that they were accidently saved or placed with the "Master" view representation active. But this didn't really happen to me in Inventor 2021. Since we upgraded to Inventor 2022 it has been happening at least a lot more often.

Now, the question is, am I doing something wrong or missing something? Is this behavior somehow expected? And most important, is there something I can do to make sure this doesn't happen?

Hi! The only workflow that I am aware leading to this behavior is that you may have changed appearance or visibility of an object within the subassembly when you are editing the top-level (or upper-level) assembly. The active design view will be reset to Master (with a prompt), the moment you try changing design view objects across levels. Such change breaks associative design view.

Many thanks!

I sometimes have my main assembly opened at the time I'm creating and thus editing the "Default" view representation of my subassembly. I then save my subassembly and place it in my main assembly. Is this what you mean by that workflow? I've never gotten a prompt doing it this way so I'm guessing it's not.

Or do you mean after everything is placed trying to edit the visibility or appearance of one of the subassemblies. Then I do get a prompt to remove associativity.

But this is not what I'm running into. My subassembly is associatively linked to the "Default" view representation in my main assembly, but when I right click it and open it it (sometimes it seems) opens with the "Master" view representation active.

I'm trying to make a screencast to show this behavior, I will post it here as soon as I can.

Hi Mathijs,

Many thanks for sharing the video! I don't think it behaves the way it should. The subassemblies should open with Default Design View Rep, not Master (based on the File Open Options). If possible, please share the files with me directly [email protected]. I would like to understand the behavior better.

Thanks again!

The dataset I used in my screencast is too large to send using mail, the zipped Pack and Go folder is about 145 MB. Is there any other way I can send them to you?

Hi Mathijs,

Is Express mode enabled? If yes, the iam file may contain the cached graphics of all components, which may increase the file size. If possible, please share the files on a cloud drive of your choice and grant me the access ([email protected]).

Many thanks!

I uploaded the Pack and Go folder to Autodesk Drive and gave you access to the folder. The top level assembly is "V3.iam" which you can find under the subfolder "Modules".

Hi Mathijs,

Many thanks for sharing the files! But, I cannot seem to download them all together. I have to do it one-by-one. Could you zip up the iam and ipt files and send it to me directly [email protected]. My email system accepts attachment less than 50MB.

Thanks again!
