I drew a circle, extruded it, added a chamfer to one edge, then created a shell. Now I'm trying to create a sketch on one end, it won't let me project geometry.. It's allowing me to project cut edges and 3D sketch. In my tutorial project geometry is on. How can I fix this?

If you can post the file, it will be easier to see the problem.

Hi! I am not able to reproduce the problem. Could you attach the file here or send it to me directly (johnson.shiue@autodesk.com)?

Thanks!

Works normally for me on your file, I'm able to project any of the edges from the opposite end.  Have you closed and re-launched Inventor?  What are your machine specs, particularly the graphics system?

I think you might be having a difficulty in terminology.

You notice that "project geometry" and "project cut edges" are different buttons, and one of them has red on it where the other doesn't.

PROJECT CUT EDGES will project any geometry that is cut by the plane on which your sketch lies.  PROJECT GEOMETRY will only project items that you select, and is not limited to only geometry on your sketch plane.

I am trying only to project geometry on the bottom surface. Cut edges, is projecting features from the the other end of the part that I do not want projected.

Does it look like the screenshot that I posted above?

Actually, no, never mind.  Take a screenshot of it and post that.  I want to see what this looks like.

PROJECT CUT EDGES takes the geometry that is sliced by the plane on which you're sketching.

PROJECT GEOMETRY takes existing lines, edges, curves, points, etc., that you choose.

That's what the button is supposed to look like.

I need to see if I can fire up my workstation and get a screencast recorded to demonstrate.
