problem in dynamic simulation of chain and sprocket

I  want to perform a dynamic simulation of the roller chain and the sprocket. Actually i want to calculate the contact force of the chain on every teeth of the sprocket  when it is traversed over the sprocket. I dont find any tutorial describing the actual chain and sprocket simulation. Kindly some one please help me in this regard

Do you mean something like in the attached animations? (they were created with Dynamic Simulation).

You can use 3D contacts or 2D contacts between the chain and the sprocket. In the output grapher you can see the contact forces.

For a more detailed answer you should please upload your iam (incl. ipt's) .

Thankyou for your reply. My problem is, i cannot create a sliding pair between chain and the complete loop of the path in which the chain is going to travel. I tried using sliding point curve pair between chain link and chain path. Only a single path line (path has four distinct curve joint together to form a loop as shown in attachment) and point on the chain i can select so that chain is travelling only over that selected line not on the entire loop of the chain path. And also if i use a 3d joint between the chain and the sprocket i am getting force values for the entire assembly not for the individual teeth which is in contact with roller chains at different angle at different instant of time.

I have only IV 2015. If you use a newer version, please save in a neutral format (.stp). Otherwise I can't help.

 

Beforehand this "statement": I didn't try it yet. My plan would be to create 3D contact (or 2D contact) between each roller and the sprocket. Then you should be able to analyse the force between any roller and the sprocket. 

 

But: I don't think this will give usable results. The distribution of forces on the teeth is a very complex problem in practice, as IMHO cannot be reproduced sufficiently well with the DS. I'm afraid the calculation inaccuracies in Inventor will determine the result. But I would give it a try.

For fun only I modelled a chain mechanism. The chain similar to 08-B1-1-48 (simplified), wheel_1 (Z=19) and wheel_2 (Z=29).

Wheel_1 rotates with 300 rpm, at wheel_2 a load torque of 45 Nm is applied.

The simulation run 0.02 sec. During this time the wheel_2 rotates about 2 teeth.

In the attached Excel sheet you see the calculated contact forces between wheel_2 and the rollers (roller 156 ... 176).

We can see: The results are absolutely unusable. I will not spent more time in this project  😉 .

First of all i thankyou so much for spending your valuable time in helping me. Can you share the methodology you followed to assemble the parts together and analysing in DS module. It would be helpful for me to give a try by myself and familiarize with the assembly and dynamic simulation. Results seems to be confusing and i will try to figure out by myself once i am done with assembly and dynamic simulation

It has equations for calculating the load at each tooth of a sprocket given the sprocket size, chain tension and other drive variables.

It's a long story. I'll try to reduce it to some words:
First I modelled a correct roller chain (inner link, outer link, rotating roller, ...). It is too complex for my computer.
Therefore I simplified the chain to a sleeve chain (attached iam) without separately rotating rollers.
In the main assembly the links are constrained to the xy_plane with a Planar joint. Furthermore they all are connected together with Line-Point joints.  
The complete chain and the wheels are placed as shown in Pic_1.
Now I added 48 2D-contact-Joints between the 48 "rollers" and the contour of the Wheel_1 (Pic_2). The same again with Wheel_2 (in summary 96 Joints).
Then I moved the wheel_2 along the x-axis to its final position (when the chain touches the wheels correctly) (Pic_3). I did this using the "Dynamic Motion" with a Gravity along the X-axis. In the "right moment" I stopped the Motion and saved the reached  position.
Now we are ready to add the simulation paramters, as speed of rotation, load (torque moment), gravity, frictions, damping, ... whatever you need. Because the computer has a hard job to calculate all these values I disregarded frictions as well as damping. But it took my computer +20 hours to calculate the 0.2 sec simulation. I will not repeat this with changed paramters. ;-)) If you are willing to do it - good luck.

I say it again: Inventor's Dynamic Simulation is not a useful tool to solve your problem.

Thankyou for sharing the methodology. I am getting problem while creating a point on line contact between the chain link and the path. While selecting the path profile during contact creation only one line is getting selected(path is made up of four lines joined together). because of that link is moving only on the selected line during the simulation. Is there any other way to select all four line in a single select so that point on the line will move on the loop completey.

No. It is not possible, to create a joint between a point and a curve. Only a straight line is allowed including its imaginary extension.

If you just wanted to create an animation of how the chain theoretically moves, this could be done with some tricks. You find a lot of suggestions in the web (youtube and google are your friends). An example you can see in the video Train_along_path.mp4, which you find at https://grabcad.com/library/train-along-path-1. (With a lot of phantasy you can see the locomotive and the wagons as chain links, the rail can be the path for the chain, ... ;-)) ).

But this is far away from your intention.  😞
