Sorry, but I think I'm missing something here.

How do you bring up the Render Image dialog box?

Go to Environments tab then Studio. Click Render Image and follow my steps. This will give you a transparent background.

This is me assuming the version of Inventor you're using.

I feel like we've crossed wires here.

I am using the Presentation environment within Inventor 2017.

so you've made a new IPN with an Inventor 2017 template .

I've created a new IPN, yes.

For images I typically go straight from the ipt and into studio to render images with a transparent background (the workflow I've suggested above). I rarely use the presentation environment to do this. Hopefully another member can provide some insight.

Ah you're trying to actually get the background of the model space removed. I understand now. The only solution I can think of is the one mdavis provided. A good article on this is one by Curtis http://inventortrenches.blogspot.com/2012/09/inventor-background-color-as-white.html

Ok, thanks. I appreciate the help.

It is a huge oversight by Autodesk to remove the feature though. No transparent background means I'll have to process all shots through Photoshop now.

Plus every time I want to run an animation, I'll have to change backgrounds.

Thanks to everyone else.

Apparently no one here has 2017 R2 installed.  Autodesk added it after i pointed out in the beta site that it was a crucial part of the sotware that was missing and something a lot of users desire now that Publisher is gone.

This is awesome! Yeah, I haven't had a chance to install R2 yet. So nice to see this implemented.
