Presentation File with Reference Assembly's

OK here's our issue.  Upgraded to INV 2017.4.1 from way back.  Not sure of all the features in 2017 Presentation files since our upgrade covered a lot of territory.  Autodesk user since 1993, Inventor since R5 so I have some history.

Our issue is creating a presentation file and associated drawing file (IDW) that involves multiple top level assembly's.

As an example, say I have a model of a car.  That is my top level.  Under that would be major assembly's of the Engine, Transmission, Cooling System and so forth.  Each of these secondary assembly's have their own BOM.

Now say that I want to do a presentation of the Cooling System only but I also need to show the Engine assembly in that drawing as a source of reference for locating some mounting points for items found in the Cooling System.

So, my question is, within the IPN environment, is there a way to load more than one assembly file and then only explode the assembly file I want to use in my IDW?  I do not want to create an assembly of in my example of the Engine and Cooling System since this would only screw up my master assembly by having duplicates.

I would really like to know if in the IPN environment, more than one assembly can be loaded and then only one exploded for the final view in the IDW?

This is common in many Parts Books/Manuals where only the parts that are necessary to the Parts List are shown while supporting parts are still displayed in the background.

The only solution we have been able to come up with is to load the reference assembly files as separate views in the IDW.  This is then problematic as if the view moves then all the alignment or sketch geometry is out of sync with these reference views.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like you should just be using design view representations setup in the master (full car) assembly that would hide (visibility off) everything but the cooling system and any parts from the rest of the assembly you need..

Then your ipn would just use that design view rep..

No need to insert multiple models..

Yes, presentations will allow you to reference multiple assemblies into the same file.

You create a presentation file & reference the first assembly & do the required tweaks. Then create a New "scene" & reference the next assembly. The create a snapshot for each scene. You can then create a drawing using scene/snapshot1. After that in the same drawing create a new base view & reference scene2.

Note that this is only supported when working in a NON-vault project.

Thanks

Chris
