PISTON AND CRANKSHAFT INTERFERENCE PROBLEM

Anonymous

Hello All,

Hope all is well. Can someone be kind enough to help me find out the reason(s) as to why the piston and crankshaft underweight keep clashing on each other?  There's one piston that's okay but the rest aren't right!   I've applied flexibility to the piston and connecting rod assembly but it's still not working.  I've been staring and working on it for days now and it's cracking me up lol.  Please help!

I've attached the assembly.

Thanks so much!

Regards,

Ellen

Many part sketches are not fully defined.

The Sketch2 in Bearing Holder and Bearing Stand are particularly suspect.

Can you post the drawings that you used to model those two parts?

I'll wager that the dimensions on the drawings were much neater (and more logical) that your sketches.

I have the assembly working - but I think it would be best if you fix these up.

Here's a new set (2020).

I've deleted some duplicate parts, made some more sub-assys, and re-worked the constraints.

Hello JDMather,

Here are the drawings of piston and crankshaft counterweight.  Thank you so much!

Best regards,

Those are not the two files that I referred to.

You had the center height set differently on the two supports.

Hello Betreff,

Thank you for taking the time to do a new set of the engine.  It seems like there are some problem with the constraints and the pistons are clashing with the cylinder?  Please see the attached screenshot.

Thank you!

Works ok here, even with the difference in axis height, that Jeffrey mentioned.

Did you install all updates?

Attached are two new files, that are fixing the height difference. Replace them in my set, and try again.

Walter,

I will make a video tomorrow, but I think there is something missing here that the mechanism cannot function as-is.

Looks good here with my settings, Jeffrey. See video.

Enough for today. We'll see.

Hello Walter (sorry for calling you betreff lol),

I've tried opening your file and there are error messages.  I've downloaded the two files you've attached and replaced the old ones but it is still giving me the same error messages unfortunately.  I've been looking at the video you've sent and it does work!  I've tried applying constraints to the connecting rod hub and the stand and it seems working if i'll drive it manually. But if I simulate it, it doesn't work.  How did you apply angle constraints to the connecting rod hub and the bearing stand? I've been working on this for two days now lol.

Thanks!

How did you constrain to keep the timing correct?

Jeffrey, for testing suppress Winkel:2 (Angle:2) in Relationships of my top-level assembly, and see the difference. In the beginning I set +/- 18° limits for this angle, but it can be set to 0°, too. The angle is a constraint versus the base.

Ellen: Without seeing your files, I don't know, what's wrong.

Hi Walter,

Sorry about that. Here's the assembly file.  I am still trying to figure out why your assembly is displaying error update.  I really want to study your constraints.

Thanks.

Ellen, this is your fileset, not mine.

I need your files based on my set, for checking any issues, that you have with them.

Hi Walter,

Sorry for the confusion. Here's your file set.  I've updated the 2 files (Base and Bearing Stand) with the latest that you've uploaded. Thanks again for your help.

Works as before here, Ellen. No issue.

But I've noticed, that you seem to be on Inventor 2020 Build 168. I'm on 2020.3 Bild 373.

Perhaps updating will solve the problem.

Also 2020.3, and I see no error messages upon opening the top level assembly.

Hi Walter,

How do I know which version I have?  Just want to make sure I've updated mine correctly.

Thanks!
