Parts lists for multiple Assemblies

Anonymous

Hi all.

Here's my situation...

I have a main assembly with two conveyors. Each conveyor is an assembly with multiple sub-assemblies. I need a parts list that shows the total quantities for all assemblies, sub-assemblies, and parts.

I know I can get total quantities for individual parts with a "Parts Only" parts list.

I set my Main Assembly as Phantom in the BOM, which gives me accurate totals for all parts/sub-assemblies in the 2nd level. But, there are still sub-assemblies in lower levels. How can I get total quantities for all sub-assemblies at lower levels?

Thanks for your help.

If I am understanding your question correctly, all you have to do is re-configure your BOM View Options.  This will expand your BOM to all sub-assemblies and will also translate to the Parts List in a drawing.  See the attached screencast.

You should be able hit the + next to the assembly in your parts list.

Thank you for your reply. I understand what you are saying. But, that doesn't work exactly how I need it.

I have an assembly with two identical conveyors. With the BOM Structure for the Main Assembly set to Normal, the parts list will show total quantities for 1 conveyor at the next level.

With the BOM Structure for the Main Assembly set to Phantom, the parts list will show total quantities for both conveyors at the next level. This is a step in the right direction. But, this seems to be as far as I can go with it.

Parts and sub-assemblies at the next level (3rd level) still show only quantities for 1 conveyor.

I've attached screenshots to hopefully help clarify what I'm asking.

In the "Main Assembly - PHANTOM EXPANDED" screenshot, all the highlighted parts and sub-assemblies should be doubled (two conveyors). A "Parts Only" part list will give me correct total quantities for individual parts. But, how can I get the correct total quantities for all sub-assemblies?

Again, thanks for your help.

To the best of my knowledge there is no way to multiply the number of parts in the sub-assemblies by the number of instances of the sub-assembly.

That's what I'm afraid of. As long as this software has been on the market, surely the developers have run into this problem before. There must be a way.

The search continues...

Thanks for your help.

WOOOHOOO!!!! I found the answer browsing through other posts.

As I said earlier, once I set the Main Assembly BOM Structure to PHANTOM, all quantities at the next level are corrected. In the parts list, expanding sub-assemblies will show only quantities PER assembly.

BUT...

In the parts list, if you pick a sub-assembly in the 2nd level and turn the visibility OFF, Inventor treats that assembly as PHANTOM and updates the parts list.

It will then show the total quantities of all parts and sub-assemblies in the NEXT level (3rd level).

The "Main Assembly - PHANTOM EXPANDED" screenshot shows (2) Conveyor Frames. All highlighted parts below are "qty per assembly".

The "Conveyor frame - invisible" screenshot shows the "total qty" when the parent assembly is turned invisible.

I've encountered a new problem...

Within my Main Assembly, I have two sub-assemblies. Both share the same parts, but in different configurations - mirrored images. Because they are in separate assemblies (both with a different Part #), my parts list is listing each part twice.

I can get the accurate quantities if I set the BOM Structure for both assemblies to PHANTOM. But, that will then take the assemblies out of the parts list.

I can work around it by manually inserting "Custom Parts" into my parts list. But, I don't want to do this every time I run into the issue.

Any suggestions?

Hello,

I applied what jhackney1972 suggested in his video (screenshot1). I then used the function "Group Settings", you can find this in the top-left corner of the Parts List edditing window (second to the left). I put the settings as in "screenshot2".

I think this will give you the correct result (screenshot3).Screenshot3.pngScreenshot1.pngScreenshot2.png.
