Orientation of model in flat pattern mode

Hi friends,

I am attaching here screenshots of a sheet metal model in 3D & flat pattern mode. As you can see front view of 3D model shows 50 mm edge vertical while front view in flat pattern mode has 53mm edge vertical. I want the edge with 50 mm  length to be vertical in the front views of both the views.

Do anyone knows how inventor creates the orientation in flat pattern mode ?Capture1.PNG

Hello,

Face based sketch coordinate system is very complicated to explain, the algorithm more like to identify an origin point which is from the longest edge but not sure sure about the side, and the longest edge direction is the X axis, Y axis is 90 degree anticlockwise rotation of X. Anyway, it's really hard to explain more detail.

However, you can edit the coordinate system by context menu from an existed sketch. See enclosed fixed part.

I'm not exactly sure how Inventor chooses the edge to align when making a flat pattern, but i do know how to change it afterwards.

If you right-click on the flat pattern entry in the browser you can select "edit flat pattern definition":

Then you get options for aligning an edge horizontal or vertical and options to flip / reverse or rotate:

That should allow you to create the orientation you desire for your flat pattern.

Hope that helps.
