We were almost there with that first try, why couldn't they put the Inactive Component Appearance in with the other "Settings..."?
(Because then it wouldn't confuse us!)
Contrast with Background looked like nothing with my light blue background and dark blue parts
Contrast with Part was pretty obnoxious - that might be what someone set yours as
One Color you can pick something obnoxious too, if you want but basic black works okay for anything that isn't black, right?
Now, if "Use document settings" was on instead of "Use application settings" then you would have had to go back to Display Appearance on the Standard tab of Document Settings.
It looks like there is some room for improvement in the clarity department as far as the Model Edge Appearance goes.
Some of the parts that I am working with are grey parts with blue surfaces (to show machining) so if One Color isn't the setting then they have different edges than the parts that are just blue (and that seems to be the case whether we set it to Contrast with Part or Contrast with Background. And then I was checking out what happened in wireframe and ... Well, I just hope I got mine back to normal!)
