I have to assemble a part. Some part files are in Inches and some of them are in Millimetres. That means assembled part has a combination of inch parts and mm parts.

 

What should be the Unit of the assembly file?

 

In my view whatever unit is doesn't matter.

What ever you want it to be.....

 

 

 

Inventor can handle both ...    If you model it in inches and bring it into a metric assembly it'll measure in metric, but you can still do what you need to.

 

 

You can sketch in either in a template by how you end the dimension ..  say 1in  or 25.4mm in the dimension box, they are the same.

 

 

We do metric, but sometimes we have to use a vendors part that's in inches.     We have vendors that want the layouts in feet/ inche, inches, meters, mm/meters

I would recommend you use the appropriate template for the part you;'re making.  This way you don't have any problems later in the tutorial.

Just remember that Inventor internally will calculate to something like 13 decimal places. Be carefully with your units conversion, in not you will have to use the "limits" options in the constraints to constrain objects. One object with two holes in Imperial units mated to another object with two holes in Metric, where you need to constrain both holes to each other.

 

Even though you enter 1.0" in Inventor, it's really 1.000000000" and a metric distance that is converted to 0.99999995" won't mate unless you use the Limits Range in the Constraints box. Expand the Constraints box ( >> icon on the lower portion of the box) and set in your Limits to allow the mating.

 

Much like rounding up 3/8" to two decimal places will give you 0.38" but really it's 0.375".
