materials missing

Hi all

My materials are missing, all I have is generic, nothing else.

What might have happened? How can I get the materials back.

If I open an old ipt the only the material used for that particular ipt is there,

the rest have disappeared

Just making sure you are not choosing the material drop down from an assembly:

Versus the actual part:

@MikeKovacik4928

What's changed since the last time you used all of your materials?

Any updates? SP's loaded?  Are you using the same project file?

Do you have custom materials added to the Inventor material library?  If not, have you tried using the Inventor Rest Tool?

Scott

No updates or sp's. No custom materials added.

I use different project files.

I have tried opening  ipt's  in a few of these different project files.

The material I set the ipt to is still there, all other materials gone.

New ipt files, generic material only

I have not tried using the inventor reset tool

Can you change materials in the iProperties?

No, they don't even appear in the scroll down list.

They have vanished

Hi Mike,

Try this. Close Inventor. Go to %temp% and delete all files there. Reboot. Start Inventor. Does it work better now?

Many thanks!

Not too sure which files in which directory you are talking about.

This was all happening last night on my laptop.

On my desktop now, with the same software loaded (Autodesk Product Design suite Ultimate 2018)

no problems at all, even with those same drawings from the laptop last night where the materials had disappeared.

So the problem is on my laptop only, something must have happened there.

Can I not reload the materials files from my original software stick. Where would they be located

Mike,

Still haven't tried the reset tool?  Sounds like a perfect candidate!!!

How weird is this.

I have copied the files back to my laptop from my desktop where the materials were showing.

The materials are now showing on my laptop.

I don't understand what happened or why it happened.

But it has now fixed itself, again no idea how or why.

Oh the joys of computers and software!!!

Hi Mike,

I was talking about system temp folder. Close all apps. Go to File Explorer. Type in "%temp%" and delete all files in that folder. Then restart your machine and Inventor. Does it work better now?

Many thanks!

I had the same problem, running the "Reset Tool" worked a treat.

This is happening to me as well. It happens when I change from one project to another. I don't see how the Reset Tool will fix this when the project file is controlling where Inventor pulls materials and appearances? Fyi the material and appearance library I use are custom.

Hi Timothy,

I think the Inventor Reset Utility may help redirect the default Appearance and Material Library to the default one. I don't believe it will help your case. I suspect there is a temporary memory corruption on the machine. Somehow Inventor could not find the proper library at the moment. There is bug somewhere for sure. Typically, if you restart Inventor, the issue will be gone.

Many thanks!

Also having this problem, of materials not showing, and it is not solved by restarting, rebooting or cleaning up temp directory, because it also does not occur every time, it sometimes does, sometimes does not.

Say 50% of the times it looses the materials.

And that is really strange.

Hi! I would like to double-check with you. When the material styles are missing, are you editing an assembly? If yes, it is as designed, because there is nothing (except weld beads) to assign a material style too.

Many thanks!
