Hi @Anonymous

It looks like you have a knurl45 pattern properly showing up on the cylindrical face but not on the top face (which appears to be colored blue). Is that true?

In anycase, Knurl45 appearance texture has to be edited in the material/appearance library to show up correctly. I just tried a simple part with a knurl applied on one of the faces and created a drawing view (shaded), and it shows correctly.

Can you try the workaround?

1. Simply edit the knurl45 in the appearance library

2. Change the Relief pattern from Knurl to say Diamond/Checker Plate/Custom Image

3. Once the appearance has been edited, it should show the texture correctly.

4. Then go to drawings and update the view

This screenscast shows you how to do it.

Thanks

Hi! The behavior does not look right. Try something real quick. Open the drawing and go to Tools -> Doc Settings -> Drawing -> check Apply specular effect. Please share the files here.

Many thanks!

@sundars  So you have a bug that needs to be fixed?

Knurl 45 doesn't work as shown by your screencast.

Knurl and Knurl45 only show in a model when realistic and can't be shown in a shaded idw

Hi @mcgyvr ,

You are correct. The video shows editing the Knurl appearance and when you change it to a custom image, it still doesn't show the texture correctly. It looks like the knurl bitmaps supplied with the material library are not correct and have very low res and hence it's not showing up.

I will follow up on it on the two issues i am seeing

(1) knurl custom image appears to have incorrect resolution

(2) realistic works, but normal shading doesnt - i suspect its related to (1).

Instead, I would use the predefined Diamond/Checker textures to get a proper texture for the knurl.

@Anonymous ,

1. Please edit the Knurl45 appearance in your parts and change the Knurl texture to Diamond or Checker texture.

2. This should update the appearance in the model.

3. Then REBUILD the parts

4. Switch the drawing - the drawing should now update the shaded views correctly.

I have attached an updated set of parts and idw with the appearance fixed to Checker. Please have a look. Last saved in Inventor 2020.

Thanks

Hi @mcgyvr

So, basically the realistic rendering uses a different high res appearance swatch/image which is significantly better than the normal ones we use for regular shading.

Hi @Anonymous

For this particular problem, as a workaround, i used the high res swatch and created a custom knurl45. You can edit your Knurl45 appearance definition and use this custom image. The custom image essentially allows you to choose any bitmap (from anywhere - not just what autodesk supplies) and render your textures to your own liking and needs.

I have reattached a fixed up part/drawing using this custom knurl bitmap.

Disclaimer: Since I created a custom image its not officially blessed and therefore unsupported but it should do the job and like i said, users are free to use their own bitmaps.

I will still try to talk to the image providers to see if we can get a better image to be added to the library but its'  probably not going to happen right away.

Hope this helps.

Thanks
