Is there a way to start Inventor & have it load a specific project & set of application options? I have 2 clients that I am currently working for that require 2 seperate workspaces & it would be great if I could set something up so that I had 1 shortcut for each client on the desktop.

Make a new project for every client, this will generate automatically a shortcut to this project. Than rename this shortcut with the clientname and use this shortcut to start inventor, this will set you up with Inventor in the correct way for this client.

No Inventor settings don't change. But you can export them for each client and import the correct settings after start

Joris Steurs , thats what i would like to avoid if possible, just 1 more thing you dont have to do.... or possibly forget to do.

Jason Murdoch What damage can this do to your design if you might forget to change the application settings? I don't see any.

Joris Steurs it actually causes issues when the cad files are delivered to the customer as i follow their folder structure & workspace file paths & if these paths are not duplicated in my own workspace there tends to be issues with unresolved files. This happened to me only yesterday when i was trying to create 1 project to deal with both clients workspaces. works great at my end, not so great at theirs.

Jason Murdoch This has nothing to do with application options but with the settings in your project. Its the .IPJ file that holds all the pathsettings etc.. I told you earlier to make a seperate .IPJ (project) per client.

Thanks Joris Steurs, i will try what you are suggesting & see what happens, if all of this is controlled by the project file, what happens when there are conflicting file paths between the project & the app options for things like design data & CC lib locations?

You need to do Save your project with Pack and Go and send it over as a ZIP file. Inside this zip file there will be a .IPJ file also. Your client needs to click on that .ipj file to open your project. This should prevent broken links etc.

Joris Steurs , thanks, but not really the solution i was looking for. i need to integrate with the end users file system, not just send a pack & go, they use explicit file paths & network folders which i have replicated in my own workspaces using vsubst to create the same search paths for the project & app option file locations.

Either you work for your client while you are integrated into his network (this can be even remotely) and you don't need to send anything to your client because everything is saved in his network or else you work outside of his network and thus you need to send your files with Pack and Go. It is logical that you can't work outside the network of your client and when you sent over your files that they will all "fall"in the right place and all sorts of links that are not controlled by the .ipj suddenly appear because of your application options settings.

The project file (.ipj) determines where Inventor looks for Templates, Design Data, and Content Center parts.  It may specify a path for any of these, or it may have Default selected, which defers to the Application Options.

Note, though, that Content Center location is where parts generated by Content Center are placed, not the location of the CC libraries.  The latter is not a project setting.

Hi,

I regularly have to work in two different projects simultaneously. I have 2 desktop shortcuts and two instances of Inventor open. To avoid making mistakes I have set the background colour for the 2 projects different. This can be done by loading a settings xml file at startup with the /IMPORTOPTIONS= addition. To also start in the right project, in the settings file I have chosen "new from template" in the startup action box. Then you can choose a project to start in. The only thing you have to do once after startup is to close the new file. I don't know if this is the best way but for me this works.
