Is There a Right Way to Use Representations and Work Planes?

Is there a proper way to use design representations and work planes so that when a part/assembly is dropped into another assembly the work planes remain hidden?

I get you can turn off work plane visibility from a different menu but occasionally you need them shown for something you're working on and then you have to toggle the visibility and deal with a bunch of different work planes?  That suggestion just...isn't helpful.

I want to hide them at the part/assembly level and have them remain that way unless I un-hide it.  Is there a best way to do that?

@e_frissell I usually turn off the visibility of all work features I place at the part level, I just name them well so I don't need them turned on, if their vis is off at the part level, they should come into an assembly the same way, unless there is a rule at the assembly level forcing them on.

I turn everything off at the part level as well.  I don't know how or why but occasionally when dropping a part or assembly into a new assembly all the planes come back on.  If it's an assembly getting placed into a new assembly the plane visibility could be off, then it goes into a new assembly and all the planes are there.

It's driving me up a wall.  I want to know what or why that is happening because I don't know - I don't know if it's related to the primary (locked) view or what

I always go back to this suggestion (not mine):

@e_frissell @mluterman Just to clarify, when I say "visibility", I mean I RMB click the plane, axis or point feature in the model browser and uncheck visibility there... I'm "not" talking about the View/Object Visibility pull-down.

The "Origin" planes, axis and point DO NOT follow View Rep.

Everything created by user will follow View Rep.

I add 2 View Reps in Template: "Default" and "Design".

"Default" is how it show without planes, sketch etc.

"Design" will have work features and sketch visible for design/mate.

"Default" can be locked so it won't change.

Thanks - question for you.  I keep seeing a "default" view rep referenced everywhere and arguably the place I'm at right now is...um, difficult (to be diplomatic) and is there a reason why "default" is referenced?  Is that word important to the view rep category someway, kind of like how naming your default templates "standard" makes the new part/assembly/drawing feature usable?

Anyways, I ask the above because we don't have a 'default' view rep and to put the original post a little differently, occasionally I'll open a file that has all the workplanes hidden but as soon as it's dropped into a new assembly all the work planes come back

It's just a name.  Another ViewRep beside [Primary].

You can always create custom views under "Representations" in an IPT or IAM.

Switch to the custom view in the IPT or IAM when inserting them into top level assembly.

Don't use the [Primary] view.

By doing this you won't have issues again.

I see, fair enough - it was referenced in a lot of posts (and a previous job always had a "Default" view rep) so it made me wonder if there was a purpose to having something titled that specific way

Okay - here's a great example of something I'm encountering which I do not understand.  Am I doing something wrong?  Am I misunderstanding how to use this?

Currently working on this assembly (assembly is in Layout view rep and all workplanes are hidden)

e_frissell_0-1715173967703.pnge_frissell_0-1715173967703.png

Open assembly and Design View is [Primary]

e_frissell_1-1715174076518.pnge_frissell_1-1715174076518.png

I set Design View to Layout

e_frissell_2-1715174117879.pnge_frissell_2-1715174117879.png

Click "OK"

Representation stays in Primary

e_frissell_3-1715174217452.pnge_frissell_3-1715174217452.png

Setting it to 'Associative' and the planes are still there

Every parts and assemblies need to set to same View Rep or ViewRep that hide planes.

Or at least every one that you want to control planes visibility need a ViewRep with planes invisible.

Would be nice if all child follow top level ViewRep.

I believe they all have a view rep where the planes are invisible or else they'd be visible in the assembly shown in the first pic?  Some reason in that assembly in the first pic everything is set to primary... From within that assembly I tried to change the view rep of the part that has a bunch of workplanes to a different view rep and it switches right back to primary - I can't figure this out for the life of me
