Ipt - Cannot save or save as

Anonymous
Not applicable

Hi.

At (seemingly) random times when working on a part file, Inventor refuses to let me save it.

  • "Save" does absolutely nothing. No warnings, no prompts etc, just nothing.
  • Same thing with "Save as"
  • Same thing with "Export to..".

The only way I can save the ipt is to use it in a drawing and save the drawing.

  • Then only as "Save copy as". Forcing me to create a new file every time.
  • The original ipt remains unsaved with the same problem as before.

I had the IT-people look at it and they tell me it's not a server/folder problem. I have no idea about their skill level though.

I'd really appreciate if you guys could help me. If this continues to happen once I get the real project started, I'm thoroughly screwed.

Inventor professional 2017.

Thanks.

What version of Inventor Professional 2017?

Are you using Projects (*.ipj) or are you using Vault?

Hi.

64-bit from Product design suite ultimate.

Build: 256

Release: 2017.4.1 (06/15/2017)

EDIT: This file is not connected to Vault. Strictly ipj.

Next time this happens can you start Screencast Recorder and record the steps you list here?

Okay, so I tried to provoke it by doing a bunch of stuff just now. Looks like it happens when I use the section view tools in the model. Saving works just fine until then. "End section view" does not help.

Any ideas? The view is still "Master" by the way and no other views are created.

Next time this happens can you start Screencast Recorder and record.

And, if possible, attach the dataset here for others to experiment in reproducing the issue.

Firstly, thanks for your time and effort.

But a screencast will not show anything. Nothing visible at all is happening. It simply refuses to save after I've used Section view.

I also tried a different ipj on a different server. The issue remains.

Your earlier post describes a bulleted list of things to see.

The only way I can save the ipt is to use it in a drawing and save the drawing.

  • Then only as "Save copy as". Forcing me to create a new file every time.
  • The original ipt remains unsaved with the same problem as before.

I don't even know if you are doing a View>Section in ipt, in iam or a Section View in idw.

Screencast Recording would have ended all doubt.

Not even any files attached....

No images...

Nothing?

I am a fan of pictures and geometry - not words.

Good luck!

My effort ends here.

I specified that it was an ipt.

I just didn't see the point of posting a video of me making a half section view of a random geometry. Also, this is the first time I've heard of Screencast recorder and I don't really know what kind of information that would be embedded.

Hi LPCM,

I suspect you might have a warning dialog concerning the Master View Representation showing up off screen?

Try this:

Reference link:

http://inventortrenches.blogspot.com/2011/01/missing-dialog-box.html

  • Click the Save button
  • press ALT + Space-bar on the keyboard
  • then press the M key (M for move)
This is what happens off screen

  • then Immediately press any of the arrow keys on the keyboard
  • finally, move your mouse around and the dialog box will now be attached to your cursor allowing you to drag it back on screen, just click to drop it in place.

I hope this helps.
Best of luck to you in all of your Inventor pursuits,
Curtis

Hello @Anonymous, @Anonymous I am not able to reproduce this issue and from the screencast it does not look correct.

Can you run the diagnostics with the instructions below:

Requesting Inventor Diagnostics Information

1. Start Inventor

2. Create a new part

3. Go to Tools Tab

4. Select +Add-Ins

5. Cancel

6. Select Applications Options

7. Go to Hardware Tab

8. Select diagnostics button

9. Start Notepad

10. Paste clipboard information

11. Save file as CaseNumber.txt

When you have completed please click my name, and at right select Send Private Message and attach the file. Thanks!

 Hi @Anonymous,

Note there is one small step missing from the previous list of steps that you might or might not pick up on, see it in red above.

I watched your screencast but I'm unsure what the issue could be. I've never run across that behavior before. The only remaining suggestion I'd have to offer is to run the Inventor Reset Utility. Here's a direct link to it: InventorReset_v1.1.zip

And here's the support article link to it:

https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/inventor-products/troubleshooting/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/How-to-use-Inventor-Reset-Utility-to-reset-the-local-environment-for-a-Windows-User-Account-Inventor.html

Note also that I embedded your screencast below in case it helps

I hope this helps.
Best of luck to you in all of your Inventor pursuits,
Curtis

Hi! Could you try something for me? Go to File -> Manage -> Refresh. Can the file be saved now?

Many thanks!

Kelly Young - I sent you a PM

Curtis Waguespack - If all else fails, I'll run a reset. Thanks for info, I wasn't aware of this.

Johnson Shiue - Refreshing did not solve it. Thanks anyway.

I just realized I've been posting from two accounts in this thread. Apparently, I've saved two autologs on this machine, LPCM and ohw.

Happy Friday @Anonymous thanks for providing the diagnostics. Nothing seems out of the ordinary, it might be a User Account Control issue or some environment related setting.

If this persists and you can show reproducible steps please contact Autodesk Product Support to dive further into the issue and create a case.

Please select the Accept as Solution button if a post solves your issue or answers your question.

Hi.

Allright, I'll make a proper support case out of it if it persists.

Thanks for trying guys, much appreciated.
