SWx is released later in the calandar year than Inventor so SWx 2018 "should" be able to open Inventor 2018.

Hi! To be more precise, this is not about who is behind whom. It is more about release naming and scheduling. Inventor's major release usually happens in April and it is named after the fiscal year instead of calendar year. So the current release of Inventor is 2018 and it was available in April 2017. Solidworks releases major release in late September. The current release is 2017 and it was available in September 2016.

In terms Inventor's ability of reading Solidworks file, Inventor 2018 and Inventor 2017.4 (released in May 2017) both can read Solidworks 2017 files. If you are a subscriber to Inventor 2017, you should install R4 update and it will allow you to ready Solidworks 2017 files.

Many thanks!
