Inventor opening multiple instances for files

My coworker's Inventor is opening multiple instances of the program if he opens a file from file explorer. If I do that it'll open the file in a new tab in the currently open Inventor instance.

On his PC also for some reason none of the files (.ipt, .iam and .idw) were associated with Inventor. I had to tell Windows to use Inventor to open the file types.

His Inventor also kept crashing when trying to edit a hole diameter on a small part where mine did it without issue. We've submitted the crash report for that so we'll deal with that when they email back.

Should we reinstall Inventor on his PC at this point?

Hi!

Your issue is profoundly reported. Here's the solution.

Regarding the "hole" issue, first, check if you have all the updates installed.

So we did the first solution already, tried to do the second by there's no "SHELL" under Inventor.PartDocument. There's only  DefaultIcon and shellex, neither of which have the associated folders or keys. My PC has those values shown in the solution though.

Just found out he didn't have the 2024.3 update and a few other non-inventor updates installed yet. Doing those now, will report back

Still doing the update install - it's been sitting at 97% for about 30 minutes now and the cancel button is greyed out. HDD lights keeps flashing though so it's doing something.

Although I checked task manger and autodesk installer isn't using any disk but it using 12-15% CPU

You have to install the software and updates with the defences down:

Set the UserAccountControl at minimum level and anti-virus disable (except for windows defence).

If you didn't low the defences on installation, these kind of problems you related can star to appear, and you will navigate in a bunch of support pages, trying to fix it without success... just because you're starting from a bad installation.

Prepare to install your software| Individuals | Autodesk Support

I suggest to uninstall the software (clean uninstall), and install again with the defences down.

How to perform a Clean Uninstall of Autodesk products on Windows

After installing correctly,  it should be fine.

Nope. We installed the latest update and then did the last solution on this page and it fixed it:https://www.autodesk.com/support/technical/article/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/Opening-inventor-f...

In case, after having applied the steps above, the issue still persists, try to change this in the registries:

  1. Browse to:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.ipt
  2. Delete the subfolder “UserChoice” from the above registry branch.

  3. Repeat the procedure for any file type. Change extension as appropriate.

Reset to the Microsoft recommended default apps:

  1. Go to Windows Settings (Windows Start-> Settings).
  2. Select Apps from the main menu.
  3. Choose Default Apps (Options on the left side).
  4. Click on RESET button.
