Inventor Crashing when Attempting to Assemble

I'm pretty new to inventor and have to do an assembly for some homework. When I go to place a piece, from file, Inventor freezes and crashes. This occurs every time. I've tried to download the recommended update but that hasn't done anything. Kind of at a loss. Any help would be appreciated.

What version of Inventor, and what does Inventor->Help->About report for your installation?

Did this work in the past or did the issue just start?

What email address are you entering into the crash report?

Can you attach a part file here that exhibits this behavior so that others can test placing into an assembly?

What version of Windows OS?

How much RAM?

Did you actually get SP1 and Update for SP1 installed?

Inventor 2016 (Student Edition)

I only just downloaded it a few days ago and this is my first attempt at doing an assembly. It didn't work from the beginning.

It says "Build: 210, Release: 2016 SP 1 Update 1 - Date Fri 11/20/2015." So I'm not sure if the updates were applied I guess. But I know I did download them and follow the installation process.

Also, it is Windows 64-Bit and I have 8GB of RAM

Here is a file that I was having problems placing. It crashed it every time.

Windows 7? 8? 10?

That file is corrupt.

Says it was created in Inventor 5 (probably before you were born) and last saved in 2015.

Create a new part file - a simple cylinder or cube.  Does that file crash when placed into an assembly?

Hi Ryan,

I see two crash reports in the system from that email address.  Both reports are from today on Windows 10 and both indicate that the file being inserted is corrupt.

Where did the file you are trying to insert come from?   Can you verify that it is a valid file?

Well the file came from my Professor so that's a bit odd that it is corrupt. He was giving us a bunch of parts to be assembled. So I guess I'll just have to build that part on my own first.
