...so I finally decided to respond to a crash report, but I will not be wasting my time any more. Good thing it only costs thousands of dollars per year per person for this software, otherwise I'd really be upset (text grab below)...

I'm sorry you are having issues with Inventor crashing and the crash reporter crashing as well. It is definitely a time eater, especially when it continues to happen! Do you mind describing what you were doing when the crash happened? Do you have all windows updates and Inventor updates installed? Updated graphics drivers? @johnsonshiue is very helpful when this sort of stuff happens, he should be able to help you if you can get him the info needed. I tagged him here so he should be around before too long.

Hi Mitchell,

I am checking with our project team and see if there is an issue with the CER email alias. Regarding the crash, I have located the report you submitted (CER:232548904). It seems that the crash happens when Inventor tries opening a drawing. Are you able to reproduce it? Could you share the files with me directly [email protected]?

Many thanks!

I can’t supply the files (and they are unrelated to each other, just 6 .dwgs opened), but I can tell you that I have a dual-monitor setup and when I clicked on the window (with 6 .dwg’s opened) from one monitor and dragged it onto the main monitor, and while still holding the window with the mouse click, I “shook” the window back-and-forth between screens and it crashed (no reason for the shaking on my part, just too much coffee, I guess).

Hi! Is the behavior specific to some drawings or it depends on the number of files selected in the operation? Are you able to reproduce it consistently?

Many thanks!

if you have multiple .dwgs open (6 on each monitor, for example) and then click "Arrange" to tile the windows if they already weren't (and stress the system), it crashes consistently. I don't know if it's the graphics card, but I'm running a Quadro P4000 with the latest driver.

I don't know if it's the graphics card, but I'm running a Quadro P4000 with the latest driver. I just did this twice, and both times, Inventor just shut everything down and exited the program without even a crash report.

Hi! Many thanks for sharing the steps. I currently don't have two monitors to check. Let me work with the project team and see if this can be reproduced. It looks like a bug to me.

Thanks again!

hi @mluterman

Thanks reporting and sorry for the inconvenience! It looks similar as known issue- INVGEN-49217: CER, Bucket(50571381) Inventor crash or exit without crash when repeat arrange/ tile. Product team is investigating the problem and will let you know if there is any update.

After investigating the crash report, we found it is a different issue from INVGEN-49217. It crashed in a UI rendering failure, "UCEERR_RENDERTHREADFAILURE", see the technique details WPF render thread failures - .NET Framework | Microsoft Docs.

This kind of failures usually are not caused by Inventor, but the operating system or video driver, especially when it only crashes on one machine. We could not reproduce it with the same workflow until now.

There are several advices we could provide,

  1. Try a different video hardware. The integrated graphics processing unit of the CPU is also an option.
  2. Try a different version of video drivers.
  3. Try a different version of operating system.
  4. Try a different version of .NET.
  5. Try only connecting to one monitor.
  6. Restart the machine.

They could be used separately or together. See if there are any chances to avoid the crashes with them.

For Autodesk Inventor Crashes:

Update Graphics Drivers:
Outdated or incompatible graphics drivers can cause crashes in Autodesk Inventor. Visit your graphics card manufacturer's website and ensure you have the latest drivers installed.

Check System Requirements:
Ensure that your computer meets Autodesk Inventor's system requirements. Inadequate hardware can lead to instability.

Add-Ons and Plugins:
Disable or remove any third-party add-ons or plugins that you've installed in Autodesk Inventor. They can sometimes conflict with the software.

Check for Software Conflicts:
Other software running in the background, especially resource-intensive applications, can lead to crashes. Try closing unnecessary programs while using Autodesk Inventor.

Run Autodesk Diagnostic:
Autodesk provides a diagnostic tool called Autodesk Diagnostic Center. Running it can help identify and resolve issues with Autodesk software. You can find it in your Autodesk program folder.

Repair or Reinstall:
Consider repairing or reinstalling Autodesk Inventor. To repair, go to the "Programs and Features" (or "Add or Remove Programs") section in your Windows Control Panel, select Autodesk Inventor, and choose "Repair."

Regards,

Peter

Thanks for all that, just FYI-looks like the diagnostic tool became this:
