Inventor combining two part files into one

I am attempting to combine two parts into into one part, then put it into an assembly file and also be able to export the part file to a .stl file. So far, I been doing this is by putting the two part tiles into an assembly, constraining it how I want it, then using the create simplified part button under simplify and using the single solid body with seams merged setting. This creates one part file that contains two of the other parts combined. When I try to put this into an assembly file, it works, However, it makes the part disappear when constrained with an error saying the 'relationship was placed with respect to geometry that is no longer available'. How do I combine two parts into one solid constrainable, printable part file, ideally but not necessarily with both maintaining their dependence on their component parts?

You could model them as one part with two bodies in the first place, then derive them out.

Or

Model the two parts 'in place', then derive.

Why combine?

Just place 2 parts into an assembly.. Constrain as needed... Save copy as STL.. Done. Print away

Thanks for mentioning deriving. I have been trying to do something like that by constraining the parts in the assembly and using the simplify button, but the proper working way to do it is by using the derive button in a fresh part file and importing the assembly. It seems like a minor difference, but it got rid of all of the errors.

that works fine...derived in a new part file to create a homogeneous part of 2 parts....there is another way too,....Shrinkwrap....Define your desired parts in an assembly then Shrinkwrap (Assemble/Shrinkwrap)..and it gives you a lot of options to simplify your new homogeneous parts!
