Inventor (2021) Very Slow Parameter File

Any idea why this .ipt Parameter File is so slow? Any modification takes 5s to apply. There are different .ipt(s) and .iam(s) linked to it, but even if they would have troubles why is this file unbearably slow? And maybe it isn't on you all's computers?

Thanks anyone!

Hi @emanuel.c

Can you give me some steps to reproduce it? It's an empty file with a lot of parameters and equations. Any changes to the parameters appears to be fast - although i dont see any real geometry consuming these parameters. Could it be because of downstream consumption being slow?

If you can post the full dataset, it would be helpful.

Thanks

So I take it, it's fast for you? I mean, just click on any equation and modify it. Add 1in for example. It literally takes it 5s until I can do anything else afterwards. This file drives other parts and assemblies so it's empty otherwise, but even if I have this file open without any other part opened (so I'm not updating any parts) it is still ridiculously slow.

I don't understand then, if it isn't slow for you, it must be something with my software, maybe an add-in or something. I really don't know.

Hi @emanuel.c

Yeah. I tried to modify quite a few of the equations. It works fine for me and is instantaneous. I originally thought that the equations could take time, but these are not that complicated. I also tried it with all addins loaded and didnt see any issues.

You could try unloading some addins and see if that makes a difference.

Thanks

Hi Emanuel,

I am not seeing such behavior either. A few things to try. Make sure all critical Windows updates are installed and graphics driver is updated. Clean up %temp%. Are you running any non-Autodesk Add-In? What is your machine spec (CPU and RAM)?

Many thanks!

Yes you're right, I've tried it on another computer it works fine also... Besides it's not that particular file, any parameter change in any ipt. is slow, but the more parameters the slower, like 6 seconds for any change... I uninstalled all add ons and it still does it. Can't think of any particular change I've made except having got 2 new monitors 4k, 27in but I had a similar setup before just different brand. However it's not like all Inventor processes are slow, only the Parameter actions. PC has i7 8700 with GTX 1080Ti so it shouldn't be a problem. Cleaned temp folder and windows is up to date. Have to keep on hunting still.

Hi! Please make sure all critical Windows updates are installed. Also, go to "Turn on or off Windows Features" and make sure .Net 4.8 is enabled.

Many thanks!

Hi

I have just started using 2021 and am experiencing the same issue. Working with the parameters is slow.

For me each edit takes around 4 - 5 seconds to complete per entry. This is not related to a specific file, it happens on all files.

Windows is up to date and Net 4.8 is enabled.

Every edit on parameters takes seconds to apply, but it's less on new files and a good 5-6s on larger files... Also, where as before, any parameter change would automatically apply on the part when I existed the parameters windows, now I have to click on update.

I'll attach the Application Options .xml setting in case you can spot something that would cause it...

Hi! To automatically update, you need to go to Parameters dialog -> check "Immediate Update" at the bottom.

Are you running any non-Autodesk Add-In? If yes, please unload those and try. Another extreme case to test is to unload all Add-Ins and find out if there is a related one.

It is still puzzling to me why it is slow. What is your system spec?

Many thanks!

Well, Parameters dialog -> check "Immediate Update" was and is checked and I still have to sometimes click the updated button.

Specs are Windows 10 (up to date), i7 8700k, Nvidia GTX 1080Ti, 40GB RAM, nvme ssd etc. It really shouldn't be a problem.

I'm running all files off a server (not Vault) but I've always done this without a problem, it's just in the recent 2 weeks I've started having this issue.

It's very puzzling to me too. There isn't a way I could contact support and have them check a few things by screen share?

I find it hard to believe that we are the only two people experiencing this problem.

It is very frustrating. There are no issues if I use other methods to manage the properties. For example iLogic forms or inserting ifeatures, but the second anything is done in the properties window it will bog down. The greater the number of parameters, the slower it gets.

How do you check for .Net ?

See image, is this correct, or must I change something?

Hi @emanuel.c@rhasell

Do you have slowdown with other dialogs like PartsList, BOM, Tables? etc. Some of those grid control dialogs share the same component and I wonder if there is an issue with the component.

A video clip showing the problem might help too.

Thanks

Hi

Not the best with videos, but give this a try.

Thank you Reg for the clear video! It is 100% percent what I experience also. At first I thought it was the one file, but soon enough I realized it was any files, just that the larger the quantity of parameters the slower it gets, up to 10s just like you showed.

I'm tempted to try an uninstall and reinstall of Inventor just in case it would fix it, but maybe we should find the issue, in case others have it too.

Would it be remnants of Inventor 2020? I've uninstalled 2020 already, so would it have taken some things with it? I don't know it wouldn't make sense. It worked fine for about 2 weeks and out of the blue it started doing this and I'm not even sure there were updates I made to it either... Yes I uninstalled all the add-ons without any success.

Very frustrating and puzzling! And to add to the puzzlement, we have 3 machines with Inventor, 2 of them act the same way (this slow business) but one seems to be fine (however I haven't given it a longer shot, just a one time try when it seemed to work normal - we only use that computer occasionally) Go figure....

Hi

I am trying to troubleshoot it as well, maybe a template/migration issue.

Due to COVID I am working from home, but I have remotely installed 2021 on my office machine. I ran the same test on my office machine with the same results.  However, I then uninstalled the inventor service pack which appears to have fixed to problem.

I have not uninstalled the SP on my home PC yet

Give it a crack before you reinstall Inventor.

Hi @rhasell

Thank you for the very detailed video. I see the slowdown. Would you be able to share your model files with us? We can try to follow your video step by step and see whats causing the slowdown. I tried to reproduce it with the other file posted by @emanuel.c  but didn't have much luck in reproducing the problem. Maybe your video + file may give us a clue.

Thanks

Will do.

My office machine works after removing the hot fix, but I have not done so on my home machine. See attached file as requested.

Hi @rhasell

Thanks. I got the file. I am playing with it now and so far I am not seeing any performance issues - although i have to follow your video step by step.

Interesting that you are saying that the slowdown happened after the recent update to 2021 (aka 2021.0.1). I will follow up on that angle and get back to you. Thats gives us a good avenue to explore.

Thanks

Thank you.

That is odd, might be something specific to my installation. I will remove the hot fix and report my findings.

I wrote a snippet of code to create multiple parameters at once, this works well for testing as I can generate the error quickly.
