Inventor 2021 Copy Bug

Hello

I just moved to inventor 2021 from 2019. Everything seems to work fine Besides Copy function

The problem is the following. When I'm working on an assembly with several parts in it and I want to use copy function: there are two ways: select part and then use "copy", you can either give the new part different name from the original part and Inventor creates the same exact new part to the desired location (which works fine with me), and also, you can give the same name as original part and inventor creates copy of part, it doesn't create new one and while changing original part, all of its dependents change with it. its like Ctrl+C, Ctrl+V. You just paste the same part several times in the assembly. Well, actually it was how Inventor 2019 used to work. But now, in 2021, when I click on Copy function and give the new item same exact name as original (reusing existing), inventor not paste the new part to the assembly but it deletes the original part I'm trying to copy. and the bad this is that id not deletes from assembly, but from the folder and then it gives me warning "specificpart.ipt" can't be found in the destination folder (which was there before using copy function). So, after this action the original part is deleted from the folder, which means new part can't be created and when I close the assembly and reopen it, the whole assembly missing the part i was trying to copy. This is very disturbing. I lost several part of my project and now I have to create them again and plus cant use copy function at all.

Need Help ASAP

Hi @gbogv2013

Thank you for reporting this issue. I have verified this to be a problem on Inventor 2021. I have logged an internal issue (INVGEN-45644) and we will take a look at it. For the moment, you could just use Ctrl+C, Ctrl+V to copy/paste same instances. Just curious, if you are placing the same instance multiple times, is there a reason why you would use copy-component instead of copy/paste or drag-n-drop from browser?

Thanks

thanks for reply.

yes, for example there is an assembly with many components. from these parts lets say 10 of them are constrained and  create a specific "item". i want several of this "item" with only 2 variable parts, ( soother 8 needs to be the same.) in this case i just select the "item" (meaning all 10 components) copy them and give 8 of them same name and 2 of them different one. so i get new item all constrained and ready to use. just changing parameters of two new parts. i find this way the easiest. if you think there is any better way please let me know.

Thanks

Hi @gbogv2013

Unfortunately, i am not seeing a way around this. I would suggest that you use simple copy/paste for those components which you need to reuse and use copy-component for the rest. I know it's more work to fixup any existing relationships but it would atleast keep the assembly sane and not fail.

Alternately, you could use copy-component and create true - copies and then maybe use a script or ilogic to replace the copies with their originals using replace-component functionality.

We will try to address this as quickly as we can.

Thanks and our apologies for the inconvenience.
