Inventor 2019 - Hang / freeze when license is borrowed

I remember this happening in a previous release, and believe it was fixed with a hotfix or other update.

When using a borrowed multi-user license, we are getting frequent hangs in Inventor. Just a few minutes ago, it sat at a frozen file open dialog for a good 40 secs to a minute.

This doesn't happen when using a live multi-user license, or a trial.

Anyone else experiencing this?

2 of us in this office are having this issue. Not sure if any of the others have tried yet.

Wow... I just got this same problem at our company... Several od different ADSK products 2019 version. It's 2 months until 2020 release and this still hasn't been resolved?

Any estimate on this? The NLM products ale basically unusable for colleagues that travel outside of the office.

Hello all, development has been working diligently and has come up with a few options that should help.

Borrowed multi-user license Inventor hangs or freezes when online

Please review the article and see if that helps.

Hi! I understand your pain.  We are equally frustrated by the licensing vendor not willing to provide a fix to the issue. I am very sorry. The current workaround is still the best we can offer unfortunately. The user will need to unplug from internet and start up Inventor and then replug it back.

The latest I heard is that the fix will be applied to future releases.

Many thanks!

just in case no one read message 17.. the registry hack does work.. but yeah suprised this has not been fixed with a service pack..

We are getting this issue on Civil 3D 2019 as well.

Yes, I know the registry hack works. I am not going to tell everyone in the firm to start digging around in the directory. That is a recipe for chaos and ultimately me having to reinstall every computer around me.

But thanks for the heads up.

We are using Civil 3D 2019 and had the same problem.. I still can't believe this isn't fixed. its been 12 months since this product was released and Autodesk has had ample time to fix it. Not even a hot fix! I also found that the registry hack was not enough.

Anyway here is the new official response from Autodesk Support, i have also attached two bat files they suggest in zip. I have tested and it works. We are now sending these out to all our users.

Thank you for contacting Autodesk Support.

In relation to this case, I can confirm the incident on 2019 products stalling with borrowed license is still open and our development team is actively working with our licensing vendor Flexera and at the same time exploring internal options in providing a fix.

The cause for the problem is that, once the license is borrowed the client application sends a TCP heartbeat message to the license server on a periodic basis, as a result the application would stall unless the connection either reaches the NLM server or the connection closes with a TCP timeout.

We have a viable workaround which requires clearing the local licensing cache on the user machine when a license is being borrowed for a product, please see if this is something that can be communicated with the user group on license borrow, steps are as follows -

1. For user who would like to borrow a license, have them launch the product and borrow the license.

2. Once a license has been borrowed, execute the "Offline mode.bat"( script attached to this email) so that the local license cache is cleared, this would prevent the client applications from contacting the NLM server.

3. After the borrow period completes or if they have to return the license back to the server, they would need to run "Online mode.bat" (script attached to this email) so the licensing info is added back to their machine.

Good day,

I'm currently using MAP 3D 2019 and have the same issue as others.  I have attempted to use your batch file solution but unfortunately it has not resolved my issue.

After looking at my registry your batch has behaved as intended. In addition to waiting 90+ seconds I can nearly instantly invoke the freeze by clicking the File menu. I've also attempted modifying only the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\...\ADSKFLEX_LICENSE_FILE value to null as suggested in another thread with no luck.

Again the issue isn't present when connected to the server or with the network card/cable disconnected.

Thanks for your support. I'll continue to follow this thread.

I really don't understand why they don't just remove the unnecessary heartbeat signal.

I checked the license out from the server and specified my period of time. After that I REALLY should not need to be connected to anything.

The shown solutions do not work if you have updated your product to latest service packs. Spent 1 hour with autodesk today diagnosing this and found it could be recreated on their end. Awaing a new solution now... pffftt

Hi Guys, In the coming Inventor 2019.4 update (the Beta does not have it yet), this issue should be resolved. I am very sorry that it takes so long. I wish it could have been resolved much earlier. Many thanks!

Batch files do not work. Windows 10, AutoCAD architecture 2019, latest updates. The files fail on the second registry key, which does not exist on either of our laptops. "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Session Manager\Environment" ADSKFLEX_LICENSE_FILE

Hi James,

I am sorry I am a bit confused here. The thread is about a general borrowed license issue on Autodesk 2019 products line. The fix I am talking about is specific to Autodesk Inventor 2019. It will be available on Inventor 2019.4 update. But, I don't believe it will fix other products' issue.

Many thanks!

Ah... I did not realize that. I'll spend some time tomorrow to see if I can
modify so that it deals with our software.

Thanks!

@johnsonshiue yes aware its inventor specific thread. Following anyway as the heartbeat is coded into all autodesk 2019 products. Maybe you could advise some sort of manager about the issue with heartbeat so it can filter onto the other dev teams.  Pretty sure they are all aware of it though.

Hi Johnson,

Let me just start by saying you yourself have been extremely good and helpful in this thread with responding to question about this problem.

But Autodesk's reaction time here is completely unacceptable. You do realize this, right? 2020 Version is already coming.

And to say this is an Inventor only problem is complete BS. It affects every product in the collection, and if Autodesk is just now realizing this, that's embarrassing. Its time Autodesk learns to talk to Autodesk.

I know this is an Inventor only thread, but please open your eyes up. Get to know your fellow technical support folks.

Thanks,

Jamey

Hi Jamey,

Let me clarify a few things. It is true that this particular issue affects most Autodesk products for 2019 release including Inventor. It is not true that Autodesk as a company is unaware of it and slow to react. We were hoping to get a fix from our licensing vendor, but we just could not get it (you can see prior discussions). On Inventor 2019.4 update, we manage to find a solution for Inventor. But, the update is only for Inventor.

Many thanks!
