Inventor 2017 .dwg will not open

I have a drawing that I can't post here that will not open.  This happened after changing something in the model file and going back into the .dwg caused Inventor to crash.  Now I can only open the file with "defer updates" on but as soon as I uncheck defer updates, it crashes inventor.  By crashing I mean the screen freezes and then it greys out after I click anywhere on the window.

I have tried restarting the whole computer, and copying the folder with all the parts into another space...  Still does the same thing.  Any suggestions?

This is not right. When Inventor crashes, did you submit crash report? If yes, could you send me an email ([email protected]) so I can find your report? I would like to understand the behavior better.

It crashes so dramatically that it doesn't even try to send a report...

Hi! What release of Inventor are you on? Have you installed all the available updates? What about graphics driver? Is it up-to-date?

Not sure that matters though.  All other files open up just fine.  Including the model of the .dwg that is having problems.

Does Inventor actually crash, or just freeze?  That is, does it disappear from the desktop, or does it just sit there not responding?  The former is what is normally meant by "crash", and is often followed by the error report dialog box.  The latter is frozen or unresponsive.  But I think diagnosis will be easier if we know which it is.

It freezes then I can't click anything and as I press ctrl+alt+delete and end program it crashes.  Windows tries to check for a problem but that is it.  No more screens come up.

Have you gone back into the model and done a "rebuild all" then saved it again then tried to go back into the drawing?

Have you tried to open on of the "old versions" of that drawing? (located in the oldversions folder in the directory that the drawing is in)..

Files on occasion do get corrupt.. It can happen.. It should't but it does.. The oldversions and or backups are one way to recover from when that happens..
