In case you don't see the Inventor 2016 R2 download link under your Autodesk Account and you are on an active subscription, make sure to scroll down to the recent section of the listing.

@david.harris  It appears this update is slow to start and finish.   Am I to assume its kind of like selecting the "Install Now" option when installing any other Autodesk application?  If that's true many users have trouble using that option because of their internet connection and speed.  Is there a way to download the entire R2 update?

Just download it through the Autodesk Application Manager it shows up as an available update now just fine.. No need to log into the subscription site... Went fast for me.. (630Mb in 3 minutes)

@mcgyvr  I wasn't referrring to downloading.   My download time of the 630 MB was about the same.  I was confirming when the installation was taking place.   Meaning when we download are we downloading the entire update or is it sill going back and downloading more files?  If its download files as part of the installation some users may have trouble.

@Anonymous  In Autodesk Account, did you scroll down to the recent listing of your product update section?

Also the build # is listed as Inventor 2016 SP1.  I know the update for SP1 was included but I was thinking it would state Inventor 2016 R2..  Smiley Mad

Gotcha..

The R2 update does seem to have some issues with the installer or something though..

It messed my whole desktop up (90% of the icons on my desktop weren't showing, the ones that were showed as twice the size.. all my taskbar icons went blank/white sheet, there was no alerts of it being finished or anything) and my desktop never recovered properly even after letting it sit for 30 minutes.. A restart of my computer fixed it though luckily..

Installer not working here either.

I ran the R2.exe, it unpacks, then blinks, and goes away.

I see Autodesk Inventor Professional 2016 R2 in my list of installed programs, but it has no file size.

Here's my "About" screen after the installer runs:

Brandon,

The About dialog will only show SP1, but you should see R2 in the Uninstall Program list in Control Panel. Do you see any of the new R2 funcitonality in Inventor?

http://help.autodesk.com/view/INVNTOR/2016/ENU/?guid=GUID-E56EC2F6-631D-4228-932A-312223C191F6

Can you post the "Autodesk Inventor 2016 R2" log file from you temp folder?

Thanks,

Danny

ok.. that makes sense..

And yes I see R2 functionality in Inventor..

I was expecting to see the shape generator toolbar in the FEA environment but it seems you need to hit the Shape Generator button on the explorer pain of the 3d modeling tab in order to "initialize" shape generator to be available in FEA..

I just went straight to Environments..Stress Analysis and didn't see any of the Shape Generator buttons so I assumed R2 wasn't installed properly..

Something is going on with my R2 installation.

I have .log files for Autodesk Inventor Professional 2016 SP1 and Autodesk Inventor Professional 2016 English Language Pack SP1, but not R2!

I am not seeing any R2 functionality.

My first thought was to uninstall SP1 and then try the R2 installation again, but SP1 doesn't show up in the list of installed updates in Windows.

Brandon,

The R2 log should be there, I don't think it has a file extension for some reason. The SP1 will probalby show up under the Programs and Features not installed updates because it is updating Inventor and the language pack.

If you still aren't seeing SP1 you might try using the Microsoft Fix It utility to remove it and reinstall.

All,

I'll attempt to clarify some of these observations, (in some sort of reverse chronological order):

  • Slow install - this installation process does not use the "Install Now" technology. It downloads a single executable which extracts to several msp files & then uses Microsoft msi technology to install/patch code. The slowness could be related to your general internet connection (time to download 600+mb), but mor elikley it's related to Microsoft security checking every single file. In the (nobody reads the) ReadMe file there is a item relating to this. "You can opt out of the additional Microsoft security checking by running the SP1 installer from the Windows command line with the optional /OPTOUT_KB2918614 flag". Of course that doesn't really help since you only notice the slowness once you actually initiate the install & if you rely on App Mgr, you'd have to do the various configurations to download first & then subsequently install with command line options. We wanted to directly whitelist these instalelrs but that was not approved by the security team.

  • In AppMgr you will oly be "presented" the R2 installer if you installed using a serial number, or are using a network license server, which is registered as being on subscription. Otherwise you will be presented only SP1. (R2 includes SP1).

  • If you don't use App Mgr, then from the AKN based download page, the SP1 download is there (bottom left corner) for anyone to install. If you are on subscription then you can click on the big blue buytton (right side) to log in to MyAccount & then you can download the R2 installer.

  • If you use App Mgr, then most of the installer Ui dialogs are suppressed. One which you've likely seen before on install is the one asking you to close Explorer before continuing. That is to enable the various Explorer based shell extensions to be properly registered (for such things as creating icon thumbnail previews, right click options from Explorer for iProperties). If those dll's are not registered properly since Explorer is running & you are not prompted to stop it, as you're using App Mgr, thenit can result in the incorrect desktop icons, etc. A reboot will obviously fix this, as will stopping/starting Explorer; this is also documented in the (nobody reads the) ReadMe file.

  • If you see an error in App Mgr (yellow/orange triangle with a number), then refer to the (nobody reads the) ReadMe file for an explanation of the error codes:

    - 20001: This application cannot be installed due to mismatched Inventor's version or language!
    - 20002: A different version of Autodesk Inventor 2016 SP1 already exists. Please remove it first before you continue to install.
    - 20003: An incorrect version of Inventor is installed. Please visit this website for more information on installing the correct version.
    - 20004: An out of date Autodesk Inventor English language pack is installed. Please uninstall the current English language pack. Then, download and install the latest version from the Autodesk website.

  • Installing R2 should create a log file called "Autodesk Inventor 2016 R2" (no file extension), in your %temp% folder or it could also be in your c:\windows\temp folder (depending on whether you used an interactive download/install or App Mgr). You will also have several other .log files in %temp% for the SP1 install & some of the other components.

  • Once R2 is installed, Inventor Help About, should show Build: 210, Release: 2016 SP1 - Date 10/13/2015. Control Panel Programs & Features will show Autodesk Inventor Professional 2016 R2, with the actual install date & version 20.1.21000.0000 as well as Autodesk Inventor Professional 2016 - "Language" with the same version number. Sp1 is no longer displayed under View installed updates. Uninstalling the R2 from there will then show SP1 as being installed. ie reverting back to whatever you had installed prior to today is a 2 step process to first remove r2 & then to remove SP1.

  • If you don't see R2/SP1 listed in Programs & Features & need to uninstall, then you can open a command prompt as administrator & type these 2 commands in order:

    - "C:\Program Files\Autodesk\Inventor 2016\Bin\UninstallTool.exe" R2
    - "C:\Program Files\Autodesk\Inventor 2016\Bin\UninstallTool.exe" SP1

  • Shape Generator will add a new icon to the part 3D Model ribbon (if you don't see it then you may need to use the Reset Ribbon command). Otherwise you can go to the FEA Stress Environment & when you create a new study, down at the bottom of the study type dialog you can select Shape Generation; you will also see several additional SG related commands in the FEA ribbon.

Hope ths helps to clarify but please ask further questions as required) - I know you will Smiley Happy

Thanks

Chris

As for uninstalling/reinstalling, SP1 only shows up after the R2 has been uninstalled.

This may or may not happen because SP1 was installed via the Application Manager without R2. Then I installed R2 over the top of the existing SP1.

Anyway, after uninstalling R2, then uninstalling SP1, and reinstalling R2 (not SP1),the Force Effect plugin appears (and I assume Shape Generator and the IDF Content Center are hiding in there somewhere).

OK Thanks for confirming. That should have worked. It should be possible to first install SP1 & then append R2.

We'll do dsome further investigations.

To clarify my earlier post, in the Autodesk Application Manager, I see only Service Pack 1 (released 10/26/2015).

I assume this is correct and the R2 download is accessible only through Autodesk Account.

In App Mgr you will only see R2 if you are on active subscription. That is based on the serial number you used to initially install Inventor or from the license server if you are using a network license.

So the question reallys is - are you on active subscription, in which case we have an App Mgr issue to investigate?

If you go to https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/inventor-products/downloads/caas/downloads/content/inventor-2... & hit the Subscriber click here button, what do you see ?

Thanks
